ABSTRACT: The article explains how the mean penumbra-umbra ratio of
groups varies with time during the solar cycle, being somewhat larger during a
sunspot maximum than during the next two or so years. The method of calculation
and data-s election. criteria and use are analyzed. Only the 13, 957 spot-group -
observations are used, which were made in a 70-year period from 1886 to 1955 and

included 6 entire solar oycles. It is found that the variation of the mean penumbra-
umbra ratio of sunspots during the solar cycle generally tends to follow the spot
activity. It is shown that penumbral-umbral variable area quotients must be
recognized,as an important parameter of the sunspot phenomenon. It is noted that
without exception, the lower of the two penumbra-umbra means is the one that refers
to the absolute maximum phase. The highest stage of spot development coincides.
with a very low penumbra-umbra value. The authors are indebted for many of the

of a real diff erenc e in large bipolar sunspot groups, and the average values of thrj
daily change in the umbral area. It appears that observed asymmetrical east-welst
distributions of sunspots can be explained, at least qualitatively, by the existenci of
nontransparent faculae. This asymmetry also causes other east-west asymmetr~-qs
found in data on solar phenomena. If this interpretation is correct, indirect infqtjni
tion on insufficiently observable photospheric faculae may be obtained by studying..,
various distributions of sunspots over the solar disk or by investigating some
apparent variations in spot areas. The author wishes to acknowledge the fine

discussions. In the discussion following the article, the author affirms thai faculae
and plages are closely related to magnetic fields. Their asymmetry implies
asymmetry in the configuration of the line of force. They in turn influence the
directivity of radio emissions. The physical interpretation of the east.~-west

Abstract : A report of observation of 3 groups of workers all at the
sarn enterprise, who worked in one, two mid three shifts
and changed shifts during the week. Among the workers,
in only the first or in the first and second shifts (f~ron
5 to 13 and from 13 to 21 o'clock), d-isturbances of cliges-
41 tion were found in 7.65% and 7-31% of the persons, and
ulceration in 1.37 and 1.22% respectively. Among workers
spending one week of the three on the night shift (from 21
tc 5 hours), disturbances of digestion were found in 21.7%
and ulceration in 3.28~ of the persons, i.e. almost 3 times
greater.

ABSTRACT: The dielectric loss of glasses of the Na20-B2 _SiO2 system containing 2, 4
6, 8, and 10 mole % LNa20 and from 22.5 to 24.5 mole % B2O1 in the qbarge (in the glass

termerature dependence of the dielectric loss at a frequency of 105 cps was measured
in glasses heat-treated for 10 hr at 6000C, and the temperature-frequency dependence
of the dielectric loss of glass with 21% Xa20 was determined at 104, 10, and 4 x 102
cps. The data showed that the relaxation maxima on the dielectric loss ourvos appear
only in glass containin-m 2% Na20, and only after the heat treatment. The maxima'~is-
appear again after heating to 7600C, when the glass structure becomes more homogeneous
It is concluded that the method of measuring dielectric loss can be used to determine

The sensitizing actions of guanidine and veratrine on -:)otasslurinduced contracture of
the sartorius and rectus abdominis muscles of the frog were investi-ated. Experiments
with denervated muscles (3-85 days after denervation) indicated that the action of
unna, ine is associated with normal f*unctibnihg - of tha myonoural synapses. This
action, disappears after degeneration of -the nerves and also after curarization. The
sensitizing action of veratrine with respect to potassium contracture, on the other
hand, is not affected I-rr either curare or denervation. It appears that veratrine, in -

2 out of 6 experiments was noted a decrease of the
contractile reaction (CH) of the rmscle, under the
effect of I or II. A more apparent inhibiting effect
of III -was noted in experiments in which muscles were
first placed in Ringer solution containing III and
had then their CH investigated under the effect of I
and II. In 10 experiments with I CR was fully inhi-
bited, in 2 =arkedly decreased. In experiments with
II inhibition of CR was noted in 5 out of 15, decrease
in 9. After III was washed out the muscle reactivity
returned. III inhibits the excitation processes
brought forth by I and II in the neurormscular synap-
Bes. This effect of III is explained by the arrest
of synthesis and by liberation of acetylcholine. Low

Abstract Carotenoid (C) content in 3 types of corn flour was in-
vestiLpted, in relation to the nature of milling in
dJ fferent cuts obtained by fractionization of the grist.
The content of C and zeaxantine differs from that of
the whole faour. With the decrease of yield %, C and
zeaxantine content in the flour grows. It has been
found that in flour samples with yields of: 0-30; 0-45
and 0-70, the content of C and derivatives is always
higher than correspondina content in the flour: with
