The K-index curves for Surlarl (using scales of 350 and 500Y) were compared with the curves for Svider (scale 5007) and Odessa (350 y). The following results ivere obtained: 1) A mw:z- mum. in the diurnal variation occurs bet%veen 9-12 h, universal time; ~X 2) There are seasonal maxima atithe eq:uinoxes (sometimes they are shifted a littie from the equinox); 3) The 350 y scale was more suitable than the 500 y scale for measurements at Surlarl; this j.B confirmed by comparing K(Surlarl) Witt. In a previous work: [Ref. 1: Constantinescu, M., and Constantinescu, T.: "Petrol si Gaze", no. 7, 1959, 298-304], the autliors have shown that mercap- tans can be produced by three method groups: i.e. by treating a neutral alkylic monoester (R - S04Na) with Na SH; from alkylic halogens (R - Cl) with NaS under pressure, and by catalytte methods. The catalysta allow a synthesis starting with reactants such as ethyl alcohol or ethylene, which directly lead to ethyl- mercaptan. In the above mentioned work (Ref. 1), the authors have studied the synthesis of mercaptans from lower alcohols. Since in the near future ethylene will be made from cracking gases or chemical reactions of methane, the study has been extended also on the synthesis of ethylene and hydrogen sulfide: C2H4 + H2S Card 1/~ R/007/6 1/012/00 110031003 Contributions to the study ... A231/A126 4=1 C2NSH. According to the technical literature the photosynthesis with ultr14 violet rays has also been studied before beside the above mentioned three methoft. The majority of the publications refer to higher olefines, but not to ethylene. On the basis of the foreign literature, the authors have established that only the photochemical method supplied a higher efficiency (80%) for propylmercaptan at a temperature of OOC. For ethylmereaptan the temperature is lower and the ef-. ficiency is negligible. The photochemical method, however, is very difficult to be applied in engineerlAig, and needs an additionally catalyst. The only practi- cal method is the catalytic method after having fDund a catalyst which supplies corresponding results at a temperature as low an possible and at usual pressure. The oldest examinations were carried out by H.R,, :Duffey In 1934, who used d.-Lf- ferent catalysts and obtained a maximum ethylene -transformation of 23.3% on a nickel catalyst. The titsk of this work is to fInd a highly efficient catalyst for the conversion of el4lene into ethy;mercapl;ND. On the basis of the studied literature, the authors could establish that gerierally the catalysts, which sup- ply a rather weak efficiency for the desired reaction, are -the catalysts used also in hydrogenation arid dehydrogenation reactions. For this purpose, this field has also been stud! 'ied and proved to be thv right way. A.W. Schultzeps pub- lication [Ref. 4: A.W. Schultze, J.P. Lyon, and ().H. Schort: "Ind. Eng. Chemis- Card 2/~ Contribution to the study ... R/007A 1/612/00 1/003/003 A23.1/A126 try", Ibid: US 2,392-5553 40, 12, 1948] clearly shows that no higher mercaptan efficiency (66%) was obtained even in the presence of a catalyst, except in two recirculating stages with different catalysts for every stage and different pres- sures, i.e. 33 and 100 atm, when the reactants were partially in liquid phase.
