PERIODICALt Zhurnal obahchey khimiit 1960, Vol- 30, No. 4, Pp- 1288-1291
TEXTs The authors converted m- and p-nitrophonylehloromethylearbinole
(Ref. 1) which are now easily available, into m- and p-aminophenylethylene-
glycols which may serve as initial substances for the synthesis of dyes and
highly molecular compounds. The synthesis of m- and p-nitrophenylethylens-
glycols was caused by heating of the corresponding nitrophenylohloromethyl-
carbinols with potassium carbonate dissolved in waters
N02C6H 4CHOHOH2Cl-------->NO2c6H4CHOHCH,OH. The two glycols which are easily
soluble in water, were extracted with ether or dichloroethane. m-nitro-
phenylethyleneglycol was also obtained by saponification of diacetyl
derivative (II), according to Scheme 2. After heating with 1% sulfuric
acid, the oxide of p-nitrostyrene yields p-nitrophenylethyleneglyeal. The
hydration process of the oxide of m-nitrostyrene is much more complicated,

since many by-products develop which inhibit the separation of m-nitro-
phenylethyleneglycol. During the oxidation of P-Aitro henylethyleneglyool
with diluted-nitgio acid, p-nitrobenzoyloarbinol (III~ develops which
melts at 134 135 t P-NO2a6H4CROHCH2 OR ~,p-N02C6 H4COCH2 OR (III). The
authors of the present paper, in a similar way as other scientists by other
methods (Refs. 20), obtained the acetyl derivative of carbinol ~III) from
p-nitrochloroacetophenone with the melting point also at 121-122 . The com-
pound obtained by Engler and Zielke thus does not correspond to product
(III) whose melting point is 132-133 C, but to the acetyl derivative. In VY
the presence of a platinum catalyst, m- and p-nitrophenylethyleneglycol
was reduced into amino compounds. High-melting products of unknown
structure.developed by the reduction of p-nitrophenylchloromethylcarbinol.
Azo dyeOpwere obtained from all amino compounds, by coupling with
T--oxynaphthoic acid. There are 3 references, I of which is Soviet.

The present work contains an accurate description of the main elements of this
chamber. Such a main element is the electron-optic transformer which is con-
structed in accordance with the principle of the cascadelike electron-optic
amplification of light. This transformer consists of an input- and some ampli-
fication-cascades which are connected by an optical contact (a thin film). On
one side of the s,,creen a fluorescent screen and on the other a photocathode
is fitted. The focussing of the electronic image is discussed. In the domain
between aperture and screen two pairs of deflecting lenses are fitted for
high frequency development. The inertialess character of this device is of
great advantage; it permits a development in cadres and a continuous high fre-
quency development with a resolving time of 10-8 and 3.10- 12 see respectively.
In the case of static operation all cascades are fed by a sectloned high fre-
quency sources For the recording of the traces of the cosmic rays a pulse-like
method of feeding the output cascade was, however, selected. In frequent
cases the cascade is fed with a pulselike high tension by means of special
circuits. "Impulse shutters" are synchronized by means of a photomultiplier,
a discriminator and a coincidence scheme (with a resolving power -with respect
to time of 4.10-8 see). The mode of operation cf the luminescence chamber de-

pends largely on the light yield, on the penetrability of the arystal for Jt_q
own radiation, etc. However, even medium-quality crystals .3till produce
passably good results. The speGt.rum of the radiation of C5J(ti) is near!y in
full agreement with the curve of the spectral sensitivity of an antimony-
cesium photocathode. The image of the trace consists of individual points
which are separated from one another by interspace2. '6ith conditions othe=wise
being equal the length of these intervals depends on -the specific ionization
of the particles, and it is just this dependence that can be used for the
purpose of identifying the particles from their trac-es, In the C.'ase of stronely
ionizing particles with dense tra,--es the optic density alora the trace is
taken instead of the length of the intervals, The curves for range-energy and
range-light yield in CsJ(Tl)-crystals, which are ~,omputed for this purpose
are given. In conclusion several photographs of proton traces in a Cd.J(Tl)
crystal are attached and discussed; they have been obtained by means of a
neutron-beam of the syr1ohrocyclotron of the Institute for Nuclear Physics of
the Academy of Science of the USSR,~

ABSTRACT: Space groups and lattice parameters of four rare-earth complexes with
organic ligands have been determined from x-ray diffraction data. The formula of
the complexes studied was He(1.nTBA]-, where HAt is piperidinium (P) or diethylammonium
(DEA) radicals, Ln - Eu, La, or dd, and TBA - four benzoylactonato radicals. The
DEA-Eu-TBA complex was found to be isoatructural with the DEA-La-TBA complex, while
the P-Eu-TBA complex was not isostructural with the P-Gd-TBA complex. This was also
confirmed by the difference in cleavage of the crystals of P-Eu-TBA and P-Gd-TBA com-
plexes: the P-Gd-TBA complex crystals do not display any noticeable cleavage. Both
P-Eu-TBA and P-Gd-TBA were more resistant to irradiation by x-rays than the DEA Com-

steef, used in manufacturing the supports of hot stove grates of a
700 cu-m blast furnace. The chemical composition of the silchrome
steel used was: 0.40 - 0.507. C, 2.5 - 3.576 Si, maximum 0.7076 Mn,
maximum 0.035% P, maximum 0.035% S,, and 8 - 10% Cr. The cast supp-
orts were originally heat-treated as follows: The supports were
heated and.maintained for 14 hours at a temperature of 8800C, then
cooled down to 7000C, and finally cooled in air. The mechanical

characteristics obtained were far below the required ones, estab-
lished for forged silchrome steels. In order to improve these
characteristics, various laboratory investigations were conducted
on samples subjected to seven various types of heat treatment. On
the basis of these experiments, it could be determined that a sili-
con content of more than 2.5% in the cast pieces reduced the elonga-
tion capacity of the material. The microstructure of the cast sil-
chrome steel, whose elongation did not correspond to the require-
ments, contained large chromium carbides, with a tendency to set
in the lattice, whereas the forged steel showed a homogeneous struc-
ture with fine and uniform carbides. In the case of cast steel
having a silicon content below 2.576, the applied heat treatment led
to a structure similar to that of the forged steel. The charges
with a high silicon content presented after the thermal treatment
a free structural ferrite. In order to check the resistance to
shocks, resilience tests with Messnager-type samples were carried
out at a temperature of 3000C. The resilience values obtained at
this temperature were satisfactory. Based on these experiments,

the authors recommended, changing the chemical composition of the
steel as follows: 0.35 - 0.40% C1 2 - 2.5% Si, 0.4 - 0.5% tin, maxi-
mum 0.035% P, maximum 0.035% S, and 8 - 976 Cr. The supports cast
from this steel were then subjected to the following heat treatment:
normalizing at 950 - 9800C, keeping the pieces for 10 hours in the
furnace,.cooling in air, tempering at 750 - 7600C, keeping the
pieces for 16 hours in the furnace, cooling in air. The recorded
mechanical..characteri.stics after the traction tests corresponded
to the requirements and are compiled in tabulated form. Conclu-
sions: The forged silchrome steel, due to its high mechanical
characteristics, can be.used-for producing supports, The cast sil-
chrome steel with an Si content if lower than 2.5% has, after the
corresponding heat treatment, mechanical characteristics similar to
those of the forged steel. Charges with a Si content of higher
than 2.5% do not attain the required elongation. If the cast sil-
chrome. pieces cannot-be hardened, it is recommended subjecting
them to a heat treatment consisting of normalizing at 950 - 9800C,
followed by tempering at 7500C. It is also necessary to undertake

Abstract; The relation between mitotic activity (MA) of cor-
neal epithelium in mice and rats and sugar content
of the blood was studi6d. Blood determination was
made by the Hagedorn-Jgnsen method. The prepara-
tions and count of the number of mitoses were made
by the usual methods. In the experiments procedures
were employed of varying the nature of the group and

Abstract: transferring the animals to a different cage, which
led to a decrease of Ilk, as was formerly shown by
the authors. It was established that the blood
sugar content in these cases is increased. However,
the study of results In individual experiments showod
that a parallelism exists between the MA level and
the quantity of sugar in the blood. Under the same
experimental conditions rats showed an increase of
mitoses and sugar content in the blood. In the
authors! opinion, the dual relation of MA to blood
carbohydrates is relatled to the participation of
the latter In preparing cells for division as well
as in the process of division, itself.

and a decrease of the pulse rate (in 7 cases).
No changes were found in the respiration rate and
in body temperature. The physiological and bio-
chemical indicators, obtained by the first series of
examinations, reflect the fact that the syndrome of
external stimuli which acts upon orientation and
defensive reflexes, influences the animals to a great
extent. The changes of dynamic indicators -nay be
explained by fadinG of emotional displacements which
are produced by the environmental factors within tl-.e
initial test series.

The adhesion iemperature of glass of the same composition was found to be

of -lass which determines the onset of adhesion, as on this depends the
clozc contact of the su--,-faces, which is favorable to the chemical reaction.
A 2ressure of 1-5 fz;/cm2 was sufficient to lower the adhesion temperature
to the softening poinz of glass. Further increase has no further affect.
A rise in the temperature of the glass mass reduces the average temperature
of the metal plate at which adhesion takes place. The adhesion temperature
was not greatly increased above that of common gray cast ir6n. There are
