Izvestiya Akademii nauk SSSR. Seriya fizicheakaya, 19599 Vol 23, Nr 7# pp 812-818 (USSR) ABSTRACT: The spectrum of the conversion electrons of the decay 166 K 166 i 166 Yb -CO-0 -7 Er (stable) was investigated by an TU T977 -b! imp-pbved magnetic p-spectrometer. The obtaining of the isoto- 166 166 pas Yb and Tu carried out in Leningrad is desmribed in short. The first part of this paper.deale with the conversion 166 166 166 electrons of Tu . As-Tu has the daughter isotope Yb 9 three types of preparatiops were investigated: 1) The thulium fraction obtained by,,zeans,of chromatographic separation from the rare earths, 2) The ytterbium fraction obtained...by.means of chromatographic separation from rate earth elements- 3) Card 1/3 A-thulium preparation separated from the ytterbium fraction Conversion Electrons of Yb 166 and Tu 166 SOV/48-23-7-4/31 20 hours after the chromatographic separation. The results of the measurements are compiled i--"table it and it beoomes clear that the spectrum of the conversion electrons of 166 Tu in most cases agrees with the ytterbium fraction. It is pointed out that the value of these results depends on the evaluation of the limiting intensity of the P-rays. Figure 1 shows the spectrum of the, conversion electrons of the isotope Tu 166 in the range of 10-185 kev of the thulium preparation separated from the ytterbium fraction. All intensities have a half-life of eight hours. Table 1 compares the experimen6~- tally determined ratio,* of the intensities of the K- and L- conversion lines with the theoretical ratios., The second part investigates the conversion electrons of the isotope Yb 166 , and it is ascertained that the ratios of the intensitSes of the K- and L-conversion lines of,thd y-transition of 80 kev strongly differ. The papers by V. N.. Pokrovskiy (Ref 8) and Ye. P. Grigorlyev are mentioned here. Further it was ascertained that a y-transition with the energy of 81.0 kev Card 2/3 takes place in the decay Yb 166 --01-Tu 166 , and one with Conversion Electrons of Yb 166 and Tu 166 SOV/48-23-7-4/31 166 166 - 79-4 kev in the decay Tu ---%.Er Finallyp the intensity of the K-2L-Auger-electrons is investigated with the aid of the diagrams (Figa I and 4), and it is ascertained that the data obtained are in good agreement with the data known from publications. TITLEj Conversion spectrum of Hf172 PERIODICALs Akademiya nauk SSSR. Izvestiya. Seriya fizicheskaya, v. 26, no. 12, 1962, 1486 -'1467 TEXTs The long-lived hafnium isotope Hf172 of T was obtained 1/2 5 years V/. in the synchrocyclotron of the OIYaI in Dubna by bombarding's. tantulum target with protons for a month. The hafnium, fraction was separated from the target using the method described by M. Vobeck~ and A. Maetalka (Collection Czechoslov. Chem. Commun., 261 1716 (1961)). The conversion------ spectrum of the hafnium fraction was measured with a P-spectrometerhaving an intermediate image and a 2~ resolution, 7 months after irradiation had been completed. By this time the short-lived isotope had decayed completely and the Hf175t of T 70 days to a considerable extent. 'The source of . 1/2 radiation used for most of the experiments was an equilibrium mixture of Card 1/3 172 S/04 62/026/012/006/016 Conversion spectrum of Hf B117Xia6 Hf172 and Lu172 on aluminum foil. Measurements carried out in the range up to 1100 key showed that Hf172 has no conversion lines above 120 key. In the range up-to 120 key, 11 lines were found, corresponding to transitions with energies of 23.6, 42, 44-5, 81-1, 112-7, and 125-5 key. The r-transi- tion with an energy of 112.7 key is already known from the decay of Lu172 The increase in intensity of the conversion line corresponding to this transition took place more slowly than that of the other conversion lines 172 .of Lu This leads to the conclusion that there exist conversion lines belonging to Hf172 at this position in the spectrum,'which also correspond to a transition having an energy of about 112.7 key. As a result of the incomplete separation of the individual lines, the relative intensities of the conversion lines in question could only be determined approximately. For the same reason, it was impossible either to determine the multipole order of the ~-transition unambiguously, jor to propose a final decay scheme. Ya., Zhdanova, V. V., and Levt Ye. Ya. TITLE: Thermoelectric properties of the system HgSe - HgTe PERIODICAL: Fizika tverdogo tela, v. 3, no- 3, 1961, 786-789 TEM The system HgSe - HgTe, which has very interesting thermoelectric properties, has so far been investigated very insufficiently, and the pub- lished data are contradictory because the system probably contained also free Hg. A very detailed study has now been made of, the thermoelectric properties of very carefully prepared samples whieveontained no unreacted Hg any longer. Hg of the type P-1 (R-1) with a p-Vrity of 99.999~/fo, Be witb a purity of 99.999% produced by the factory 11K 8n" khimik'19 and bidistilled r:n Te were used for the synthesis. The latter c t ined Al and Pb impurities which had been detected by spectrum anal;!is. Tke pure elements were fused in quartz ampoules (HgTe--66ouC, HgSe-790 C). To obtain a complete reaction, the melts were kept at 500 OC for 100 hr, after wfich no free Hg was found any longer. Specimens of a size of 00.8 - 0.9 =2 1 25 mm were subjected to a homogenizing heat treatment (200 C, 200 - 300,houra). Subsequently, they Card 1/5 SlIMPY003100310151050 Thermoelectric properties ... B102/B205 were subjected to X-ray and miorostructural analyses. The electrical con- ductivity 6, the thermo-emful and the Hall constant R of these specimens at room temperature were measured. Resultst A study of the dependence of I on the composition of the system has shown that 0 has a broad maximum at a concentration of 5000- a was found to be a liaear function of the concen- tration; it changes from -95,~kv/0C (HgSe) to -115 /Av/00 (HgTe),. This low value of c( indicates either a nearly stoichiometric composition or degener- acy. A study of the deviation of'the curve 0C. f(Iog n) from the theoretical one shows that there exists a partial degeneracy. Taking the letter into account, the authors calculated the carrier concentration (n) from the Hall constant. Fig. 4 illustrates the dependence of carrier concentration and carrier mobility (u) on the composition. u had been oalculated from R and,-, Whereas n is almost equal for both pure HgSe and pure HgTe, u is 20,000 for pure HgSe, and 22,900 om2/v.aeo for pure HgTe,~ The absence of a ~-point is indicative of the absence of a hyperstructure. Many specimens which had not been subjected to heat treatment, showed anomalously high values of u (at n-3-1_3.9-Io17cm-3)t 28,000 CM2/v*sec for 93% HgSe + 7% HgTe, 31,000 cm2/v.sec for 80% HgSe + 20% HgTe, 32,000 OM2/v-sec for 300pe HgSe 70% HgTe. Fig. 5 shows u a f(log n) for specimens of different compositions. Card 2/5 207190 S11811611003100310151030 Thermoelectric properties off 3102/B205 The anomalous course of curves 2 and 5 can be ascribed either to,'a nearly stoichiometric comp6sition or to the effeot of impurities. It is known that the effective carrier masses for HgSe and HgTe are very small. The values calculated for different compositions (1) in mole~o are listed in 6 table. ;-The authors thank A. R. Regel' for his interest in the work, and L. S. Stil!_ i bans and B. P. Mitrenin for discussions. Ye. 1. Nikoloakaya is mentioned. A. I. Zaslavskiy and T. B. Zhukova carried out the X-ray structural analyses. There are 5 figures, I table, and 17 referencest 10 Soviet-bloc and 7 non- Soviet-bloc.
