TEXT: The authors studied the prod 'uction of methylvinylketone (I) by
condensation of inductrial formalin (IIYand chemically pure acetone (III).
This was achieved by a vapor-~phase reaction on hi-gher.oxides of rare
earths, acid clays (e.g. gumbrin, kill) and industrial catalysts
(e.g. Cd-Ca phosphate, Ca phosphate), performed, in a flow type latoratory
apparatus at from 280 to 450-50009 ke, 4000C preferable) at volume velocities
from 100 to 1000-2000 1 gaseous III per 1 1 catalyst per hour, with
45-50 ml catalyst and a molar ratio of II : III - 1 : 1. The composition
of the reaction mixture was determined analytically (e.g. I by Kaufman's
method,'II_by(reaction with dimedonp etc.)# and that of gaseous products.

Abstract: As a continuation of previous work by the authors (WhIhim., 1956,,
24220) a study was made of the effect of addition of KHCO? (1) on
solubility of MgCO., (TI) in 10% solution of aaccharose, at 2oo, and
of kinetics of deconposition of Mg(HCOj)x (III) on boiling with a
solution of saccharose of the same concentration. It is shcnm that
on increase of conceutration of I from 0 to 2% the solubility of 11
increases considerably (from 0.46 to 2.27 mg-equivalent NgO in 100 nLI
solution), ebangi but little on further increase 'of I content of
the solution. It van ascertained that decomposition of III takes

!TITLE: Structure and mechanical properties of low-alloy
titanium alloys

TEXT: The object of the present investigation was to deter-
mine the cause of deterioration in strength and plasticity suffered!
by titanium alloys of a composition near to that of the a-phase when
ithey are slowly cooled from the P range. Tho experimental
materials included titanium iodide, technical-purity titanium and
Ti - 4% Al alloys, containing 0.55 - 1.62% V, o.64 - 1-36c,i 1-10,
o.66 - l*.27% Ha or 0,7109'a
r1e. The effect of the following treatments
was studied: 1) annealing at 800 OC for 2 hours; 2) water-
quenching from 1 250 OC; 3) furnace-cooling from 1 250 u". The
first series of tests comprised determination of the mechanical
properties. Typical results for pure and alloyed titanium are
igiven below.'

To-determine the cause of marked differences between the effect of
slow cooling on the properties of pure and alloyed Ti, the micro-
structure of specimens subjected to various heat-treatments was
studied, the composition of the second phase found in slovrly-cooled~
alloys was ditermined and its effect,on the mode of plastic
~i.deformation was studied by microscopic examination of test pieces
i extended to various degroes of deformation and by following t~he
changes taking place on the surface of preliminarily polished
tensIle test pleces dur:Lng the actual tensile test. Conclusions:
1) decreasing the rate at which Ti alloys,containing small
additions of the P-phase stabilizing elements~ are cooled from the
P.range brings about a change in the structure of the alloy grains.~
and a.decrease in the-mechanical properties. 2) The structural
change consists of the appearange of plate-like precipitates of the.
second phase, formed above 800 OC, i.e. in the P -.> a+P trans-
formation range- 3) The presence of these precipitates -.eads to
nonuniform deformation; as a result, microcracks are for-iod in the
region of localized deformation in the early stages of plastic flow
and this causes a decreases in strength and plasticity of the alloy*

The harmful effect of the second-phase precipitates increases

ABSTRACT: Investigations are made into the processes whereby freely poured
Fe, Cu and Ni powders are sintered. Smoothing over of the micro-
profile and spheroidization of pores is observed. Shrinkage of Fe
powder is one-half to two-thirds less than that of copper. The com-
pactin8 and sintering of Fe-Cr and Fe-Ni mixtures with and without
added G, as well as with iron-alloy powder, is studied. The funda-
mental etements of the process procedure are elaborated, and the
mechanical properties are investigated. An optimum regime for
sintering a cermet layer of trimetallic strip is found: Tempera-
ture 1180-12000C, holding time 10 min. The influence of small
additions of Ti and B on the properties of Pb bronze is verified.

strength and ductility of the bronze. It is shown that in the sintering of free-flowing
Pb-bronze powders, it is better to use . unreduced initial powders of the components.
When the Cu powder contains 0.7-1.50/0 oxides, the sinterability of the bronze improves
and its strength characteristics increase.
