Title Use of Sodium Alginate to Ameliorate the
Technology
of Concrete Mixes
Or-Ig Ptxb: Dokl- Bolg- AN, 1957, 10Y No As 117-119
Abstract: Ra-alginate inproves the structure or
eonmte, increases
:its plasticity and density, promotes enhan
imperseabi-
lity to vater, resistance to frost and chemical
stabiliti.
Na-alginate added in an amount of 0.01-0.05% of the
veight
of cement,, increases compression strength at the age
of
2B days up to 8%. Concrete with added Na AlOnate does
not undergo stratification on jarring.

Coverages 'This is a popular booklet on the jet propulsion of
today and tomorrow.
The author describes why the achievement of high speeds requires
the
application of new techniques, and how this progress has been made
possible by the genius of UWR scientists. A.-description of
reaction
engines with liquid oxidizers and of ram-jet and gas-turbine
engines
follows. In the last three rhnpters the author considers the pro-
blemis of supersonic speeds, and the jot propulsion and flight of
the
future. The booklet is provided with 18 diagrams.

1958. 223 p. 40,000 copies printed.
Ed.: Vasillyev, A.A.; Tech. Ed.: Tsigellman, L T.
PURPOSE: This book presents a discussion of the principles of
jet propulsion and Is intended for members of DOSAAF (the
All-Union Voluntary Society for the, Promotion of the Army,
Aviation and Navy), particularly young members.
COVERAGE: The book describes the new element added to
aviation
by jet propulsion, explains the operation of a jet engine and
how It achieves formerly unheard-of speeds, analyzes the
differences betwwon jet-propelled and piston-driven flight,
and discusses the design of modern jet aircraft and related
questions. Data from abroad on jet propulsion is also
presented. The book closes with a Mramatization of a scene
aboard a future atomic rocket plane Mhich will fly from
'Leningrad to Shanghai in 40 minutes. According to the
atithor, the direction'of further developmbnt must
be to diminish the specific gravity of the power plants

which in the case of gas turbine engines can be
accomplished in
5 ways: (1) Increase of the pressure ratio in each
compressor
stage. This makes it possible to decrease the number of
stages
of the compressor and cut down its weight. (2) Increase
in
the temperature of the working cycle of the engine. This
requires use of new extra heat-resistant materials,
especially
for the manufacture of structural members and components
which
operate In the high-temperature zone. (3) Use of
materials
with hioest' possible mechanical properties for
manufacture
of structural members and components operating under
conditions
of comparatively low temperatures (for instance, the
wheels of
the stages of an axial compressor). (4) improvement of
the
structural design of the elements of an engine,
separately and
in combination, such as the blades of the compressor,
ROzzlO
assembly and turbine, the rotor shaft, the-control
system, and
so forth. (5) Use of welded structural members in an
engine
(for instance, steel compressor ca*ings). The author
mentions
new types of fuel which will allow enormous increase in
altitude

and speeds. A project for a high-altitude supersonic jet
bomber, proposed by the well-known Austrian scientist Eugen
Saenger, is mentioned, as well as the latter's report on so-
called photon rockets at the International Conference on Jet
Engines in 1956. The use of atomic energy for jet engines
and
the development of space ships is predicted. The book
contains
85 figures.

TITLE: Device for cl-eep and relaxation testing of plastics
PERIODICALi Zavodskaya lnboratoriya, v. 28, no. 4, 1962, 498 -

TEXT: A testing device based on the loading of a lever is
described. The
size of the plastic specimens is 55 - 100 mm length, 1 - 10 mm
thickness.
The load of the lever can be changed between 0 to 200 or 500 kg.
An im-
proved moJel of the device for breaking load up to 1500 kg was
tested. The
loading limits are changed by replacing the lever with 1:10 arm
rafio by a
lever with ratio 134. For relaxation tests the loading is
replaced by a
spring. The device can be adjusted for constant temperature. No
compensa-
tion for dynamometer deformation during the relaxation test is
provided.
Tests of KACT_2(KAST-V) glass-reinforced plastic show low creep
(0.5% at
10 kg/cm2) along the warp, and higher creep (3% at 7 kg/cm2) at
an angle of
45 0 to the warp. There are 3 figures.

TOPIC TAGS: glass plastic, glass plastic AG-4S, elasticity, creep,

ABSTRACT: The orthotropism of the elastic properties of AG-4S glass
plastics was in-
vestigated on'10-25.mm wide and 3-4 mm thick test samples cut out
from 250 x 250 mm
laminates. In addition, the elastic constants were determined at
room temperature.
Flormulas are given for the calculation of the elastic coefficients,
such as the modulus
of elasticity, Poisson coefficient, shear modulus and the modulus
characterizing the effect
of shear on the tensile strain. It was found that the'elastic
characteristics of a materivj
of uniform strength do not dependon the width of the'sample (4-30
mm), but depend in
or o
part on the thickness of the laminate. This is due to the fact that
with a constant numb
layers (all laminates had the same number of layers), the
diff'orence in thickness of the
eparate laminates Is determined by the different relative am of
glass fibers and

resins, which affect the elastic prope~tie's of the material. Ile
values'of the modulus of,
elasticity and Poisson coefficient are tabulated for. different q
angles w *ith resp4ct to the,
direction of the fibers. 7be creep under tensile stress at 30 and
100C and at 4P = 01 and
Q = 450 was tested in samples 3-45 mm, thick and 10-26 mm, wide. ,
At 9 = 451 the !Tn-P-0--f-j1
glass plastics Is more than t10 times as high as at 1P 00, Le-.-
the,A~nlsotropy
of the creep of glass plastics Is considerable. It was found that
the crepp of AG-V glass
plastics increases 1. 5-2 times on heating from 30, to 100C at 4P =
0. For samples-cut out
at an angle of 450, the creep increases 3-4 times on heating. The
creep for compressed'
plastics is ten times as great'at 1000 as at 300. Orig. art. has.-

ABSTRACT:
The authors state that the service life of

boxes. The Voroshilovgrad plant imeni Parkhomenko

that inspite of the low values of stress, requirements must

increased for welded seems, subject to dynamic loads,

under difficult corditions. The collective of
designers and
technologists of the abo-ie named plant de-

ABSTRACT; Candidate of Technical Sciences, S.P. Mitrofanov, developed the
group-machining of parts on metal cutting machine tools. Equip-
ment used for this purpose has exchangeable and adjustable
parts permitting the quick setting of machining parts of different
dimensions and shapes. Information is presented on equipment
used at the Luganskiy zavod imeni Parkhomenko (Lugansk Plant
imeni Parkhomenko) for milling grooves, centering and drilling
holes in bushings and in pins of plate chains. The following
devices are described; milling head of the 116BS2G" machine,
consisting of two casings attached to the tool holder (Fig. I)
and fixed together with bars; a two-spindle milling head (Fig. 3)
for the '16N82G" machine of rigid design (Fig. 4); special
pneumatic clamps for fastening bushings of plate chains (Fig. r);
self-centering pneumatic device for drilling central holes in
