TITLE: Wall-blooks of Electric Steel-melting Furnaces From Scrap of Magnesite-shromite Brioks%4 PERIODICAL: Ogneupory, 1960, No* 4, Pp. 186-188 TEXT- Experiments with these wall-blocks which were carried out at the Chel;abinskiy metallurgieheskiy zavod_(94llX4Lbin~l;_ltttallqrgLeALIlant) are described in the paper under review. The charge was produced by crushing scrap of used magnesite-chromitti- and chrome-magnesite bricks. The chemical compo- sition of the experimental ohargee is given in table 1 and their granulation in table 2. Various grades of steel were smelted in the furnace with magnesite- chromite wall-blocke, the.temperature of the metal before tapping being between 1560 and 16400- It is stated in conclusion that the stability of the magnesite-ohromite wall-blocke rammed from. scrap is not inferior to that of wall-blocks made from magnesite powder. Various other furnace parts can also be produced from ground scrap of used bricks. The consumption of metallurgical Card 1/2 S/133/61/000/007/007/017 A054/A129 AUMRSt Yartsev, N. A., Tulin, N. F* TITISt Use of concentrate instead of ferrotungsten in the CbM PMUODICALI Stall, no. 7, 1961, 613 - 614 11, 1 When the metal bath in alloyed with for-rotungsten containing 70 - 73% tungsten, the quantity 6f-tungaten that can be reo6vered from the bath is 85 - 95%, depending on the steel composition, The great losses in tungsten are due to its h#b specific gravity (19-32) and high. melting point (about 3,38000 . Even at the maximum temperature of the molten metal tungsten will not melt entirely and part of it settles on the bottom of the bath, In order to reduce tungsten losses, tests were carried out in the Chelyabinskly metallurgichaskiy zavod (Chelyabinsk Metal- lurgioal Plant) with the cooperation of M. I. Shatalov, P. 1. Puzikov, T. A. Bros- lavbkaya and N. T. Privalov to try out replacement of ferrotungsten by a tungsta concentrate. The test meltings were made in a 5-ton aro furnace, the concentrate was added either during melting or in the charge. The latter method was found more efficient, both with regard to operational conditions and -the utilization of tungsten, because when the concentrate is added to the charge tungsten can be re- Card 1/3 S/133,/61/000/007/007/017 Use of concentrate Instead of ferrotungsten, in the CbNZ Ao54/Ai2g duced from wolframite during the melting of the bath. As reducing agent silioo- chrome 1501 (49.2% Si and max. 30% Cr) was used, the charge consisted of 0.5 - 0.7% C, 2.70% Cr, 8.4o% w and 0,60% Sip as prescribed for 3X288 (3012VB) typo staft. On the bottom of the bath 250 kg lime was added, next 400 - 500 kg ball-bearing steel scrap, low-carbon waste from the rolling shop, silicoohrome, then again ball-bearing steel waste, and at the edge of.the burden the tungsten concentrate, The melting of 3Kh2V8 steel takes 3 hours and 20 mirmtes. The finished metal con- tained: 0.33% C, 0 24% Oh, o.23% Sip 0.017% 3, 0.023% P, 2.34% cr, 0.17% Nip 8.36% W and 0.43% V: At a power-consumption of 686 kwh/t 5,040 tons of good quali- ty steel were produced. The tungsten-concentrate has a high sulfur content (0-55 - 0.65%) which can be lowered by skimming part of the slag in the reduction period for 30 - 40 mi=tes after refinin starts and adding-fresh slag or by processing the slag with aluminum powder. The phosphorus content of the steel produced with the concentrate in lower than that of conventional steel, because the wolframite concentrate contains less phosphorus than ferrotungaten. The recovery of tungsten Is less efficient when the carbon content decreases during, amelting, it also de- pends on the excess amount of silicon and on the way in which the concentrate is fed into the bath. TITLE: Hydrogen Embrittlement of Steel With Special Reference to Medium Containing Hydrogen Sulfide (Khrupkost' staley, vyzvannaya vodo- rodom, osobenno pod vozdeystviyem sredy, soderzhashchey serovo- dorod) PERIODICAL: V sb.: 4-y Mezhdunar. neft. kongress. Nr 8. Moscow, Gostoptekh- izdat, 1956, pp 124-136 ABSTRACT: An investigation is made of the effect of H saturation upon the brittleness of mild steel (0. 1 and 0.081o C) resulting from saturation with H from a medium of wet H2S, and also the influence of the struc- ture of Cr-Mo and Cr-Ni-Mo steel on susceptibility to brittleness upon saturation.with H. In the initial state the annealed wire with- stood 20 and 24 bendings, C content being 0.116 and 0.0876 C, respec- tively. After 24-48 hours in water saturated with H?S, the number of bends required diminished to 8 or 9. Keeping the specimens in Hg or heating for one hour at 1000C after saturation with H restores the Card 1/2 properties of the wire. Washing the wire with dry HZS does not Hydrogen Embrittlement of Steel (cont.) SOV/137-57-6-10944 result in embrittlement of the wire, neither does holding in benzene saturated with H?S. Embrittlement is induced by solutions in which dissociation of HZS into ions occurs. Steel subjected to cold deformation undergoes considerably greater em- brittlement when saturated with H. The effect of the structure of the steel on its susceptibility to embrittlement was investigated with Cr-Mo steel of the following To composition: C 0.26, Si 0.23, S 0.007, ~P 0.012, Mn 0.44, Ni 025, Cr 1.02, Mo. 0.30 and with Cr-Ni-Mo steel of the following composition (14: C 0.37. Si 0.08, S 0.005, P 0.018, Mn 0.92, Ni 1.37, Cr 0.92, Mo 0.20. The specimens are heat treated in 12 different ways and are of the following structures: Granular pearlitic, flake pearlitic with flakes of various thickness, bainitic and martensitic with different degrees of tempering. Saturation with H is by electrolysis in nor- mal HC1 solution. Mechanical testing of the specimens is on a tensile testing machine at 1 mm/min. It is established that the minimum decline in plastic pro- perties after H saturation is in specimens the structure of which is of maximum thermodynamic stability (graralar pearlite, thin-flake pearlite); specimens with martensite structure exhibit the greatest degree.of brittleness. Saturation with H under static loading is the most unsatisfactory condition in terms of the brittleness of steel. An explanation of the diminution in the ductility of steel is offered in terms of dislocation theory. Card 2/2 N.K.
