Nauk 1957, Vol 61, Nr 3, PP 341-396 (USSR) Received: 5/1957 Reviewed: 6/1957 ABSTRACT The present survey systematizes the most important experimental data on the properties of pions and their interaction with nucleons and nuclei. The first part deals with the interaction of pions with nucleons and is divided into the following sections: the properties of pionsy the scattering of pions by nucleons (phase analysis of this scattering, depc~ndence of the total cross section of this scattering on energy), the creation of pions on the occasion of nucleon-nucleon- collisions, the creation of pions under the influence exercised by T -quanta. Summ~,a of first part: The energy dependence of the cross sections of photoproduction and the scattering of pions by nucleone have many features in common. The cross sections of both Drocesses attain their maximum at the energy E - 110 - 120 MeV of the pion@ in the . CARD 1/3 PA - 2898 Pions. (survey of experimental Data) oenter-of-maes systemp Also the "width of the maximum" in the cross sections of these processes is nearly identical. "Resonance" in the cross sections of photoproduction and scattering of pions by nucleons is determined by inter- action in the state with the total angular momentur-a and the isotopic spin 3/2. B6th these processess apparently pass through one and the same intermediary state of the excited nucleons. Experimental data, anyhow, tend to con- firm a profound inner connection between scattering proces- ses and the photoproduction of pions on nucleons. The second part deals with the interactions of pions with nuclei and is Tivided into the following sections: The interaction of pions with nuclei (elastic scattering, the cross section of recharging, nonelastic scatterinE, absorrtion of pions), the photoproduction of pions on nuclrA (on deuterium, on complicated nuclei), the production of pions by nucleons on nuclei (the dependence of ';he production cross section of the pions upon the ene~-gy of the nucleon, the energy spectrum of the pions, the dependence of the production cross section of pion@ upon A, the ratio of the production cross section of CARD 2/3 Pions. (Survey of experimental Data) PA - 2898 mesons with different chargeu the effects connected with the action at the COULOMB field of the nuclei, the mechanism of the production of pions on nuclei. Energiya, 1957, Vol- 3, Nr 7, pp. 54-55 ~3STRACT: ,n3 the authors carried out In an ice prism of 100x10"3o c- measurements of the distribution of the density of the theTral neutrons which occur with slowing down of neutrons of a ,b 4- Be source. The source was fitted into the center of the Dri3m and an indium foil (by means of which the density of the thermal neutrons was mee-gured) was irradiated at various distances fnDm the source in channels within the prism. (17.4 11 31 cm). For the purpose of eliminating the influence exercised by the cavity, the indium foil was irradiated inside ice rods which were fitted within the chan- nels. The activation due to the resonance neutrons is infinitely small in the intervals Ix 17 cm because the density of the re- sonance neutrons at increasing distance from the source decreases rapidly. The activation by the resonance neutrons at 11, = 17 cm amounts to only 0.11~ of the entire activation of the foil. The method of the measurements was de2cribed already in one of the Card 1/2 authors Drevious works. The diffusion length for ice at Measuring of the Diffusion Length of the Thermal Neutrons 89-7-13,/32 in Ice to 140C amounted to Li = 2.85 t 0.05 cm. The density of the ice was determined hydrostatically and amounted to 0.69:t0.n1 g/cm3. The value obtained for the diffusion length Li of the thermal neutrons in ice can be comparvd with the previously measured diffusion length of the neutrorm in water- LW = 2.68 - 0.02 cm. comparing the value, the various ranges of the Assorotion c and the transition tr for water and ice must be taken into account. Next, some details are discussed. The agreement of the experimental value for Li with that of Lw (by taking account of the deDendence of the ranges c and 'tr upon the density and the temperature) indicates a slight influence of the modification of the chemical binding up.on.the diffusion length on the occasion of transition from water to ice. Pulsed _meetsf'of beryl- lium bronze~are powered by a capacitor bank of 0.1 farad capacitance. The capacitors are i~harged~%hrough limit resistances to 2 kv from a thyratron rectifier, and'a 1-100/5 ignitron is used as the svitchinS element. Synchronization and control for operation with a synchrocyclotron are obtained by a special circuit. This arrange- ment f~r obtaining the pulsed field operates reliably. In the tests two separate .pagnets were used, each producing a field of 146 kilogauss. The use of the 1-100/5. Card -1/2 L 2535-66 ACCESSION NR: AP5021359 0 igniL,ron when proper heating and cooling were maintained prior to switching in the field secured operation without breakdown for 20-40 hr at a switching rate of 10/min. The Joint operation of the pulsed magnet with the synchrocyclotron required. some rearrangement of the control system to guarantee that no particle was emitted i without accompaniment of a pulsed magnetic field.
