ABSTRACT: The cross section for elastic scattering of protons by
tritium was measured at energies fxom 300 to 990 keNf.
The'maximum
number of the noticeable different angles was 8 (40-1500 in the
c.m.s.). A detailed description of the experiment and of the data

ing was carried out by the least-square method with the aid of
an
electronic computer, with account of only the s and p waves, and
under the assumption that there is no spin-orbit interaction or
a
change in the spin of the channel. A phase shift analysis was
also
made with three and with two parameters. An increase in the
number
of parameters does not change essentially the average values of
the
phase shifts, and merely increases the limits of the errors. The
resonance parameters obtained were used to calculate the cross
sec-
tion of the He3 (no p) reaction for thermal neutrons and the
devia-
tion of the energy variation of the reaction from the 1/v law
at a
neutron energy 30 keV. The corresponding values amount to 3100 b
and 15%. The experimental value of the thermal cross section is
5400
b, and the deviation amounts to -30%. An allowance of the
contribu-
tion of the other channel can reconcile the absolute values of
the
thermal cross section, but it will increase the discrepancy
observed
in the energy4dependence of the (no p) reaction* The appearance
of
an excited He level is demonstrated by the results, and the
failure

to observe it in other investigations may have been due to
experi-
mental inaccuracy. The, resonance pa;,,ameters determined from
the
different interactions are in poor agreement with one another.
Con-
sequently the question of the values of the resonance
parameters
and the nature of the level cannot be regarded as completely
explained.

ABSTRACT: The authors analyze all the available data on p-T
interactions, including
measurements of the elastic scattering cross sections, of the
anomaly of the cross
section near threshold, of the cross sections of the reaction
T(p,n)HO3, and of the
polarization in the reaction and in the scattering. The
analysis is quite general,
with a m1nim= of simplifying assumptions. Unlike earlier
papers dealing with this
subject, the authors take into account the reaction produced
during the elastic
scattering and the spin-orbit splitting. Only unambiguous
phase-shift results
which have physical meaning are included in the analysis. The
simplifying assump-
tions still included are that the partial waves with angular
moments. > 2 irmate a
negibld contributionp that there is only one resonant level in
the aGglet s state.,

and that no spin flip takes place in the elastic scattering or
in the reaction.
1-lie scattering phase shift and the cross section of the
reaction in the state IS
are calculated and a phase-shift analysis of elastic
scattering Is made. The re-
sults are still not conclusive enough to provide definite
conclusions concerning
the existence of a He4 level 'With -eO Mev excitation energy.
Nor do they provide
any quantitative data on the behavior of the Interaction above
2.7 Mev. The polar-
ization of the elastically scattered protons is -2 4 and -10
25% for 1.5 and
2.0 Mev respectively (at 110* angle), but in view of the
general complexity of the
interaction) there is need for more polarization experiments
at low energies. Fur-
ther theoretical and experimental study of other processes
proceeding via the com~-
pound nucleus He4 are also necessary. "The authors thank A,_B.

TITLE, Non-Oxidant Steel Heating in Continuous Three-Zone Furnace
With
the Use of Oxygen
PERIODICAL Kuznechno-shtampovochnoye proizvodstvo, 1960, No, 3,
pp, 28 - 33
TEXT~ The article conta ns a brief discussion of the general
design prin-
ciples of new heating furnacesNil"developed in the USSR (at
TsNIITIMAS~,, Teplopro-
yekt, ZIL) and by "IncanTe-scentl' (British), working with heated
air, and detailed
description of an experimental furnace using air mixed with
oxygen and natural
gas- The advantage of the new design is its simplicity and
dependable operation.
The furra-ce (Fig, 4, drawing) has three chambers, all 240 mm
wide and 420 nun
high, with a 140 mm groove in the bottom. Steel blanks are pushed
into the
grooves,. There are 4 burners in the first 980 mm long ch3nber
(design of the.
burner described and shoim in Fig, 2), The second 700 mm long
chamber is sepa-
rated by a wall from -the first, and the products of incomplete
combustion get in-_
to the second through an opening in the wall. The second chamber
is separated

diameter opening to con-
tinue combustion. Air is let also into the third ?80 mm 1cng
chamber where 0061,.-
busticn is completed. Operaticn is ccntrolled by throttle
diaphragms, The fur-
nare frame Is =ealed tight, and covers in the vault are
sealed with sand. Heat-
ed blanks move out through an -,pening in the bottom fitted
with a special docr,
The walls are screened off with duralumin sheet_:; to keep
down the temperature on
the outside. The combustion products pass thrcugh a
recuperator out of the
building, and a smoke exhauster on the way from the charging
docr prevents com-
bustior. products from bursting out, into the shop The work
capacity of the fur-
nace is 2207 to 259 k&/h- BlankS are pushed in (by the
pusher, "6" in Fig. 4)

include the quan-
tit-ies of gas and oxygen gaffed the temperature of air fed
