Besides at the working out of the methods the cross section of the scattering of deuterons on deuterium,in the interval of the deuteron energies of from loo - 6oo koV was measured at the angle of 67c In the center of gravity system. The results obtained for 6oo keV agree with those by N,.P.Heidenbtrg (Kheydenburg) and Roberts (Ref 5). The methods used permitted the meanurement carried out at very small energies ( up to 7o keV) in the reaonancfi-range of the D-T- ,reaction. The scattered particles were registered by means of proportionality counters,. The resulto of the measurements for Card 1/3 the D D-sonttvring and for the D-T noattering are illustrated Scattering of Deuterons on Deuterium and Tritium 56 34.-4-55/6o at Small Unergien In 2 diagrams, For both cases there is also given the ratio between the measured crone oection and the crone section of scatterine: by a Coulomb field at the same angle- In tho range of small onergieu the nuclear D-D-scattering is m~.inly an S~S,ncatterlrig in the singletstate and in the quintet state. The measurements carried, out In this work allow only the oval- uation of the phase in the quintet utate. The character of the energy dependence of the D T-scattering in the range of omall energiea gives information no to the existence of a resonance- seattering, The experimental values of the scattering cross sections are close to the computed curves but always lo-2o% lowor. At the end the authors propose it procising of the meas- uremonta in thin. ranj'!e an well an a detailed analysis of the reoults. Balashko and Barit already des- cribed a method of investigation (Hof 4), whiah was also used for obtaining the results dealt with by the present paper. A target chamber filled with a mixture of hydrogen and deuterium served the purpose of determining the a-yield of the reaction T(d,n)a. The elastic, gfoattering oross section triton-hydrogen was measured at energies of the bombarding tritone of < 530 kov at three different angles. The results obtained are shown by a figure. Within the limits of experimen- tal errors it was possible to describe the results by assuming Card 1/2 pm a-scattering. For an interaction radius Scattering of Protons on Tritium at Low Energies SOY/56-36-6-51/66 a a 3.10-13 the contribution made by the p-phase to the scattering arose section in the energy interval under investi- ation in not eater than I %. The maximum contribution theoratioally remounts to not more than 3 %. The results ob- 7 tained by a phase analysis for protons with an energy of 176-7 and 118 key are given. The results of investigations show that scattering within the range of low energies by phases may be described according to Frank and Gamsel (Ref 1). The scatteringeannot be considered to be a pure potential soatteringg one of the a-phaaes must be positive. According to references I and 2, a singlet phase has this po'sitive sign. The authors finally thank 1. M. Frank and Fe L. Shapiro for raising the. problem and for discussing the results obtained* There are I figure and 4 roferencasy 2 of which are Soviet. A phase shift analysis of the results of the measurements of the pT scatter- k0wd 1/4 'ACCESSION NRs AP4037609 ing was carried out by the least-square method with the aid of an electronic computer# with account of only the a and p waves, and under the assumption that there is no spin-orbit interaction or a change in the spin of the channel. A phase shift analysis was also made with three and with two parameters. An increase in the number of parameters does not change essentially the average values of the phase shifts, and merely increases the limits of the errors. The resonance parameters obtained were used to calculate the cross sec- tion of the He3 (n, p) reaction for thermal neutrons and the devia- tion of the energy variation of the reaction from the 1/v law at a neutron energy 30 kev. The corresponding values amount to 3100 b and 15%. The experimental value of the thermal cross section is 5400: b, and the deviation amounts to -30%,. An allowance of the contribur,j-.-~, tion of the other channel can reconcile the absolute values of the thermal cross section, but'it will increase the discrepancy observed in the entrqy4dependence of the (no V) reactions The appearance of an excited He level is demonstrated by the results, and the failure COM ' 2/4 PCCESSION NR: Ai4037609 to observe it in other investigations may have been due to experi- mental inaccuracy. The resonance parameters determined from the different interactions are in poor agreement with one another. This procedure vas used also to measure the cross section tor elautic scattering of 110 by deuterons and scatterliw, of tritons by bydroeen. Vie reduction of the experimental data and I of the puUtrhed data has shown that the cross sections of tho reactions d(t,a)n and dole can be described by n resonant fonmda for one level, with the Values! of the reaow~lt~!o parrmeter satisfying the principle of charge independence of the nuclear forco.-. . 7he cross aectiorin for the scattering of deuterons by tritium and by 110 are ni.;o described by a one-lvvel resonance formulap with almost the same values of the jAronr-tero. A phaGc-shift analysis of the triton-hydrogen scattering~ iat energies balaw " key was made and has shown that a resonance at higher ener- 1 gies is possible. None of the data contradict the existence of a level with exci- tation energy near 20.5 Rev. Vie fact that this level does not appear :in elastic scattering of deuterons by deuterium is duo to its rftiote position and its low statistical welubt. In principle the experiments permitted them to record Ao particles decaying according to the following scheme: A 0 --) n t )to. They detected gamma rays from the decay of AO mesons by means of a telescope consisting of ocintillational and Cherenkov counters. They find that the cross section of formation of AO particles has a value approximately equal or less then io-31 cm2/aucleon. They draw conclusions concerning the mechanism gov- erning the formation of A particles. The authors thank V. V Krivitskiy and A. I. Hukhin for assistance in setting up the col- limator.
