ABSTRACT: The author reports on the experimental investigation of the
high-frequency spark-over ir air, argon and neon. The
prossure varied betwecn jo-3 and 10 mm Hg, the wave lengths
in the field from 18.3 to 85 cm. The results are graphically
represented and are jompared with the theoretical results
of Kihara [Ref 4 1 (good coincidience, especially for higher
pressure) &~ncl of Posin [Ref 5 1 (bad coinciclence, quali-.ative
difference). The author thanks Professor N.A. Kaptsov.
There are 6 figures, and 6 non-Soviet references, 5 of which

ABSTRACT: The authors very briefly describe an electrostatic biprism attachment for
a UEMV-100 electron microscope, which makes it possible to operate the instrument as
an electron~lnterferometer or as an electron interference microscope The electro-
static b1prism cWlsts of an approximately 1 micron diameter quArtz fiber with a
metallic coating rmaintained at a positive potential of a few volts. This biprism to
gether with a slotted diaphragm is mounted in the electron beam. For use as an elec-
tron interference microscope it is advantageous to 3fiount the biprism as close to the
objective lens as possible. It waa possible to achieve satisfactory operation with -
the biprism as close as 3 cm to the objective gap. Photographs are presented showing

the Interference fringes obtained in the measurement of the thickness of a film, and
in the measurement of the contact potential between load and chromium. For the latter
measurement, lead was deposited on part of the chromium plated quartz fiber. Orig.

In order to be abld to study hemodynamics and the effects of pharmacb~"
,'Aogical agents, and in order to be able to take blood samples from dogs in
prolonged experiments in the absence of an experimenter, a technique was
-developed for chronic implantation of a probe in the vascular lumen. A
,series of experiments was performed for this purpose which involved 75
)dogs. The technique developed is not difficult to effect and can be proposed
!as a,.meth-Qd.fo chronic probing of the aorta to obtain hemodynamic indices. I

In most of the dogs, the probe war, inserted through the right carotid
artery and passed down into the abdominal aorta. The probe was fastened
in the carotid artery and was passed out through the withers of the animal.
'A cutoff valve was placed at the proximal end of the probe.
Blood clotting is the most frequent postoperative complication which
'arises in conjunction with insertion of chronic probes. Consequently,
special attention was devoted to the study of coagulatory and anticoagu-
,latory mechanisms. The nature of the material from which the catheter is
prepared was found to be most significant. During implanting of probes
best results were obtained by using polyethylene tubes which had been heated~
over a burner and then shaped.
Beginning with the third day after the operation, the majority of dogs
showed changes in the peripheral blood which manifested themselves in an
increase in the sedimentation rate and the total number of leukocytes, and
a decrease in the hemoglobin level and the total number of erythrocytes,
The leukogram showed neutrophilia with a sharp shift to the left, as we3l
as lymphopenia and eosinopenia. These processes are viewed as a reaction'i
of the organism to the process of thromboembolism in the kidneys and
,qp~~en with its consequent complications. -J

In order to avoid the traumatic effect caused by the free end of the
probe on the vascular wall and the process of thromboformation, the probe
i,was placed into the deep femoral artery and fixed at the juncture of the
common femoral artery. However, the contracting, pulsating vascular
*wave as well as the ligature of the vessel along the path of the probe caused
-an ulceration of the vascular wall on the 7th and the 15th day in all cases.
Promising results were obtained in probing the right ventricle of the
heart through the jugular vein. Two dogs *with a normally functioning pFobe L
--in this position lived for more than a month. Biochemical investigation of
i'the blood excluded the possibilfty of'thromboformatio.n or any tendency to-
:wards it. The absence of the process of thromboformation was confirmed
-by special morphological inyerstijzatAon.,
The research performed has, demonstrated that this techniquie developed
,of chronic probing of the aorta can be recommended for registration of hemo-
dynamic indices in experiments performed under sp!~ci.al. jconditions ~n.the_.-..
absence of an experimenter.

ABSTRACT: The first section of the article gives a review of the extent
to which the pledges given by the various schools in Leningrad
in connection with the 40th Anniversary of the October Revol-
ution have been fulfilled. During the six montha,the product-
ion of the school workshops amounted to a total of 5,148,700
rubles or 119% fulfil ment of the plan. This includes 53
metal-cutting lathes, 2,234 pieces of men's and women's cloth-
ing, repair of 252 machine tools and the construction of school
devices, tools and various instruments. The article mentions
a number of schools, indicating to what extent each has ful-
filled its obligations and what they have done. The second
section deals with the students' self-activity which is great-

233 meetings with innovators of industry and 635 technical
excursions have been arranged. It also indicates the schools,
where technical conferences for the study of advanced work
methods were held* and mentions a lecture delivered by G.S.
Aleksandrov, member of the Society for the Dissemination of
Political and Scientific Knowledge (Obahchestvo po raspro-
straneniyu politloheskikh i nauchnykh znaniy). Mention is
made of 400 exhibits displayed at the Technical Exhibition.
The article enumerates supplementary obligations assumed by
some schools to improve the instruction. The following sect-
ion covers the activity of some schools in arranging radio-
fication on some collective farms, furnishing equipment and
tools to workshops, childrens' homes, boarding schools etc.
The author also points out the great help afforded to some
schools by their base enterprises which supplied 1 million
rubles worth of equipment for workshops and laboratories. For
this, credit is given to the "Treugollnik" Works (Zavod "Trou-
gollnik") and the Crane-and Transport Equipment Works imeni
S.M. Kirov (Zavod pod'yemno-transportnogo oborudovaniya imeni
S.M. Kirova). The author mentions the constant help given to
the schools by the professional-labor organizations of Lenin-

grad in furnishing inventory for the cultural and sporting
needs of the schools. Great support is also rendered by the
Komsomol organizations. At the conclusion the following
school-mastere who handled the competition in an uneatiefact-

road School Nr. 1 (Zheleznodorozhnoye uchilishche Nr. 1),
F.P. Tereshchenko, Director of Trade School Nr. 17 (Remeslen-
noye uchilishache Nr. 17), N.V. Gulevich, Director of Technical
School Nr. 13t and Biryukov# Director of Building School Nr. 19
(Stroitellnaya shkola Nr. 19). It is also noted that a number
of schools lag in their endeavors to carry out the teaching
program, while in 11 other schools a considerable number of
school hours are not being utilized among which the following
schools are mentioned: Technical Schools Nr. 1, 2, 3, 49 5#
6, 9, llp 12, 13, 14, 15, 19 and 20; Trade Schools Nr. 1, 4,
9, 10, 119 12, 139 15, 24, 27, 2aq 50, 32, 35t 42 and 631
Building Schools Nr- 5 and 101 Art Trade School Nr. 241 and
High School Nr. 189.

Abstract The tests were conducted in one of the shops vhere bi-

method of HUbl(Gyub0. The intensity of the color
was measured on a IM -M apparatus using a light
filter and cuvettc~j with a 10 mm layer thickness.
