proposed for determining the dehydration or.the meat during
freezing. On 'the basis of an analysis of the heat balance
durinf; freezing and the theory of control-led cooling rates,
the authors conclude that the rate of dehydration of the
meat 6uring freezing follows an exponential law:

Experiments have been conducted on the separate cooling of
a hind quarter weighing 34.65 kg and of a gluteus; muscle
weighing 1.297 kg at an air temperature of 20, a relative
humidity of 95%, and rate of travel of 0.1 m/sec. It has

Abstract gluteus muscle mg in 1.2254. Good agreement was observed
between the experimientally observed values and calculated
values. Check tests on commercial butts showed that the
differeace between the calculated and amsured values was
of the order of 2-3%. The authors recommend that-Utree
weighings be made when the natural losses in meat cooled
under different technical conditions with a central-layer
temperature of 30-150 are to be determined. From 'the two
changes in the degree of dehydration, g, and g2 at times

TEXT: To determine Mn and Zn in high-purity bismuth, a specimen (- l g)
in a quartz crucible is irradiated by a st1ream,of slow neutrorts

(8-101 neutrons/cm-sec) for 20-48 hrs. 10*-20 mg each of Mn and Zn are
added to the irra.diated specimen as carriers (in the form of chloride
solutions), and it is dissolved in aqua regia. The solution is
6oncentrated WitkL HC1. The residue is diluted with water to reduce the
concentration of HCl to 0.6-0.8 N, and H 2S is bubbled through it to
precipitate Bi, Ou, As and Sb as sulfides. After separationg the filtrate

(containing Mn and Zn) is boiled with HNO 3' then neutralized by an NaOH
solution to a weakly ac~6d reaction, and KH 4OH and H202are added to
precipitate Mn as MnO 2* After separations the precipitate is dissolved in
a mixture of HNO3 with 3202 while being-heated, and as the H202 decomposes,
MnO is precipitated by adding solid KCIO (to separate Mn front the rare-

earth elements). The precipitate is again dissolved, solutions; of Bi, Cu,
Zn and Ni salts are added as reverse carriers, and precipitation is
repeated by adding MnO 2* The MnO 2 is reprecipitated once again. The
precipitate is diasolved. NH 4C1 and Na2 HPO4and NH4OH solutions are added.
The evolved MnNH4PO4 ic separated, dried, and the intensity of P-radiation
caused by the prestence of Mn56 is measured by a Geiger counter.. The
precipitate is calcined, weighed and the weight used to calculate the
percentage of Mn evolvod from the specimen. The Mn content is found by
comparing the registerod activity with that of a precipitate evolved by the
same method from a spocimen of bismuth to which a known quantity of Mn was

added before irradiation. ZnS is precipitated in an acetate melium from
a filtrate (obtained after the separation of MnO.) containing Za. The
precipitate is dissolved in 10 ml of I n HHOV heated to boiling point

that was injected into a magnetic trap in the experiments of A.M.Iskol'dskiy, R.Kh.
Hurtmullayev, Yu-Ye-llesterildiin, and A.G.Ponomarenko (ZhETF, 47, No. 8, 1964). The
plasmas (ion density about 111 13 cm-3) were produced with the aid of a conical theta-
pinch. Approximately 0.1 cm' of D 2 or Ile was admitted to the vacuum chamber and a
2 1& 20-40 W capacitor was discharged through the ionizing winding some 300-400
microsec later. The heated plpsma entered the 150 cm long 1C cm diameter region be-
twaen the two magnot ic mirrors (mirror ratio - 1.4, magnetic field strength 4 3 kOe)
through one of the mirrors, tho field strength in which was lose than that in the
other by a factor of 1.3. Diagnosis of the plasmn was effected with the aid of 0.4,

The last was mounted in the region of one of the magnetic mirrors andl was so designed
that only ions with Larmor radIJ exceeding a preset value could reach the collecting
electrode. A small number of high energy chargcA particles (energies up to 5 kev)
were observed; those are ascribed to formation of a plasmoid in the conical plasma
gun during the first half-period of the discharge. Most of the charged particles in
the magnetic mirror machine had energies of the order of 100 eV; the density of
particles with energies between 20 and 200 eV decreased exponentiall, with a time

constant of 80-90 microsec. I-t is concluded thij 3by means of external injection
(fast theta-pinch) a plasma with a'density**of 10 cm-3 ind an average. charged pa.,,--
cle energy of 100 eV can be obtained in a magnetic mirror machine in. which the mag-
netic field strength is betvieen 1 and 3 kOe, and that such plasma can be employed to
