ABSTRAM In 1944# during the air raids many small chimpanzees of do-
lioate constitution periched from fear in the Hellabrunn
Zoologioal Gardena near Munich, while their larger brothers
got over the horror quite unharmed. Zoologists have studied
this phenomenon, and 4 years ago the German scientists Eduard
Tratz and Heinz Hook published an essay according to which
the anthropoid chimpanzees which perished in Hellabrunn
differ greatly from the large chimpanzees in their psychology,
unatomy and behaviour. In fact, they represent quite a new
species which have been given the name "Bonobo" as they are
called by the natives in the Belgian Congo. T~e author also
calls attention to the diaoovery of a hitherto unknown wild
bull - the Novobos - in the forests of Indo-China and Burma.

Preflight aircraft servicing is carried out by a crew of 8 mechanics
organized into four groups according,to the four major groups of services
shown in the above ta"ble. The four groupsconsisting of 2, 3, 1, and 2
mechanics, respectively, can complete the servicing of the aircraft in
111.2 minutes.
The servicing craw proceeds with its assigned tasks (enumerated in
Table 1 under "Task Code" column) in the order given'in Table 2 in the
"Task Code."
.Those "tasks" having no code number and taking zero time to complete are
called "fictional tasks"; they account for time intervals following a task
.,which must await the completion of one or more additional tasks before pro-
ceeding to the one next in order. (for instance, one mechanic must complete
his work in the cockpit before another can get in] Information from
Table 2 is used to construct an operational diagram to gra0hically outline
the work flow during the servicing operation; here, "fictional tasks"
are shown as broken lines.

TEXT: Consider a rectangular system of coordinates in the
plane. Al-~-ng one axis (the y-axis), we lay off the number of

combination has n bits, we consider straight lines of the
form x + y = n In the plane we construct a grid by drawing
straight lines parallel to the axes. Each way of arriving at
a given node of the grid from the origin determines uniquely
a code combination. As a measure of the difference between
any two code combinations we take the number of positions in
which they differ. Consider an n-bit code combination from
the group determined by the node K . There will be k "I'''s and
n-k 110111's. When s Itl" symbols change to 11011 symbols, so

drawn: when d = 1, any combination of node K+l or K-1
differs from any combination of node K by a minimum of 1 bit.
Any combination of the node K differs from any other
combination of the same node by an even number of bits. For odd
d , combinations differing from the given one terminate on nodes
with an even or odd number, depending on whether K is odd or
even. For even d combinations differing from the given one
terminate on nodes with an even or odd number, depending on
whether K is even or odd. A correcting code detecting single
errors has combinations differing from each other in at least
two positions and this can be constructed by taking all even or
all odd nodes and all combinations ending on these nodes.

On the Georntrical Interpretation of a Binary Code Correcting
Multiple and Single Errors
A code for correcting errors of even multiplicity can be
constructed by taking all even or all odd nodes and, in each
group of combinations determined by the corresponding node,
one combination is chosen for transmission. This is illustrated
by an example. A correcting code in general is considered by
means of an example. One point which emerges'is that as noise
increases so does the incidence of errors of even multiplicity.
