U.S.S.R., 4) 41 pp. 319-334. 1941.- Measurements were carried out by means of an electron beam accelerated by an electrostatic aggregate and oscillating under the influence of an alternating magnetic field. The oscillating beam entered 2 vacuum calorimeters successively, of which one was lined with Li, the other with Pb. The difference in the temperature of the calorimeters was measured, &s well as the absolute value of the heat developed in one of them. Correcting for the thermal effect, due to the partial absorption of the radiation by the walls of the calorimeters, the data make it possible to determine the difference in the radiation losses In LI and Fb for different energies of the electrons In the beam. The experimental d-ita agree with calctantions according to the theory of Bethe and Heitler. The conclusion is drawn that, when fast electrons pass through Pb, no processes connected with the trans- formation of the kinetic energy of the electrons into the energy of particles weakly adsorbed by Fb take place, apart from the ordinary radiation losses accounted for by theory. The radiative loss in only a in a mono-kinetic electron beam of 0.5-2.6 m.- small 'Dart of the total loss, so that a differentird method is iised. The electron beam strikes alternatively a calorimeter contg. Li foil. in which the radiative loss can be disregarded and another contg. Pb in which, because of the high nuclear charge, the radiative loss is relatively important. The walls of the calorimeters are chosen thick enough to adsorb all the material radiation, but thin enoiigh to be nearly transparent for the high-energy photons emitted by the radiative slowing down. The difference in the temp. rise of the 2 calorimeters, as compared with the energy absorbed by the calorimeter bearing the Li foil,.gives the part of the radiative slowing down. To avoid the error due to the inconstancy of the elec. potential on the ends of the 12-meter-long discharge tube, the beani is alternately directed by magnetic fields on both calorimeters; the alternation is 4-10 times per sec. The current was const. during the irradiation within -10~,. An ingenious electron- optical system permits the beam to be directed on the two symmetrically built calorimeters. The sensitivity of thermocouples used it; improved by the following, deyice: the light spots of the galvanometers hit Se photoelementB, between tile electrodes of which another set of galvanometers is placeO.. Thur. for the abs. temp.-measuring thermocouples the deflection is I division per 5 x LO-f*.JWThe capacity of both calorimeters, suspended in vacuo, was about 43 cal./*C. The temp. difference between the calorimeters is of the order of 10-f0 . According to the authors, magnetic sound recorders are extenDively used in many air force units for recording radio traffic between flight supervisors and pilots. However, the "Dnepr" and"Mag" type recorders are not perfect. Sen Sgt P.M. Stixdnik of the author's unit made some improvements. The Improved recorder can be operated uninterruptedly for 12 - 15 hours. The recorded sounds can be checked (reproduced) during the time of recording, Four times as little tape is used during one hour of operation, and this makes it possible to have 1200.m. of tape on one reel. The sound recorder iv composed of an RSIU-3m type ultrashortwave radio receiver for recording radio traffic., and a medium wave radio Card 1/2 SOVIN" -59-1-27/39 An Improved Magnetic Sound Re~~order receiver for checking the operation of homIng 1,;viio stations and making time checks, The device makes It possible to rewind the tape more rapidly in both directions. The above mentioned advantages were achieved by reducing the speed of the tape run from 192o5 mm-/Beo- to 45 MMO/BeC. This was done by Installing a speed reducer, which changes the relfitionship between the motor revolutions and the tone BpIndle. The improved magnetic sound recorder, according to the author, is used in h1B arlt with P1w,Aqs, Thsr& is onla dla.-i~am. Card 2/2 ..
