GENERAL A. Negotiations with the Archbishop of Cyprus for a four-acre plot of land for the new Nicosia Bureau were completed. This site, located on the western fringe of Nicosia, near the old airport, will be leased for 99 years. Formal signing of the lease is expected to occur in March, after both parties B. Deputy ie traveled to Cairo the week of 4 February to interview applicants for vacancies in the bureau's Arabic monitoring section. Eighteen candidates, selected from nearly 300 applications received in response to advertisements placed in the Cairo press, were interviewed and tested. Per a request from MOD, the bureau's cruising and Persian monitors surveyed the clandestine Voice of Feda'i radio from 28 January to 4 February to assess reception and content. drew praise from Embassy DCM Tom Carolan. A. Monitorial/Editorial 1. As domestic pressure escalated in opposition to Cyprus President Spiros Kiprianou's handling of the UN-sponsored summit with Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktas, the bureau provided significant service to Embassy political officers, keeping them apprised of developments; this service included telephone briefings on and the expeditious processing of a parliamentary resolution criticizing Kiprianou and the president's rebuttal.
