The continuing high level of interest in all permutations of the Mideast "peace process," particularly as concerns Jordan and the Palestinians, was again brought to the fore. A. Monitofial/Editorial 1. The Iraqi Air Force claimed it "completely destroyed" Iran's oil terminal on Khark Island during a 15 August raid. The claim was called into question by the Iraqis themselves when they followed up with two subsequent bombing attacts which, according to Baghdad's Voice of the Masses radio, were meant to obstruct efforts to repair the damage caused by the first raid. 2. According to the Beirut newspaper AL-SHARQ, cited by Radio Monte Carlo, the Syrian, Iranian and Libyan foreign min- isters discussed possible purchases of nuclear weapons "to con- front the Israeli nuclear threat." This came in the joint statement issued after the 24-25 August meetings in Damascus. 3. Information copies of the bureau's list of agreed translations of terminology used in Iraqi military communiques were pouched to NEAD, Gulf and London Bureaus. B. Special Services 1. Bureau Technician replaced the printer on the ponyline to the embassy Political Section with a modified one to handle five-ply paper to meet the greater demands during Sec- retary Murphy's visit. The extra copies of incoming material were given to the Murphy delegation for briefing packages.
