SUBJECT: Monthly Report, Okinawa Bureau.--May 1983
FBIS for visited the bureau
30, 31 May. toured the bureau, was briefed on
bureau operations and bureau modernization plans, and met in
separate sessions with U.S. staff and TCN personnel; he also
had private meetings with all available U.S. staffers. On
31 May he visited the Kadena Airbase flightline for a special
briefing on the SR-71 reconnaisance aircraft.
A. Editorial/Monitorial
Okinawa backstopped Soviet television coverage of
the funeral ceremony in Moscow of Arvid Pelshe on 1 June.
Other Soviet satellite programming during May included a special
feature on PRAVDA to mark Press Workers Day on 5 May, with an
introduction by PRAVDA Chief Editor Afanasyev; a documentary on
the 21st on the history of Soviet television; a World War II
Victory Day talk by Marshal of the Soviet Union Sokolov on the
9th; and a documentary film on Afghanistan on the 25th.

at the bureau's Memorial Day picnic in e recreation area/
playground on 30-May.
C. Chinese monitor was given a Certificate of STAT
Appreciation for giving calligraphy classes in the Talented and
Gifted Program of Kadena Elementary Schools.

1. Three Rhombic antennas were repaired during the month.
Two had open transformers and one had a broken antenna wire.
2. Operations building air conditioning system stopped
cooling and an outside engineering firm (American Engineering)
was called in to do the repairs.
3. The concave section of the ROSET antenna was given a soap
and water bath with detergent this month.
4. New wind-speed meter received was installed atop operations
building.
5. All preventive maintenance of bureau's communication
equipment has been performed as scheduled.
