Operations Group,.FBIS SUBJECT: Monthly Report, Okinawa Bureau-_-July 1983 I.. GENERAL. A. Japan's Crown Prince Akhito and Princess Michiko made a brief visit to Okinawa on 13. July as part of a nation-wide blood donation campaign now underway. Extreme security measures were in effect and no incidents of note occurred. B. The dollar continued to strengthen during the month reaching.over 243 Yen to the dollar, its highest level in seven months. A. Editorial/Monitorial 1.. We. assumed video coverage of the "International Review," "The World Today" and "Community" programs and daily. video and program summary coverage of the,1700 GMT."Vremya" program from Moscow Television from 23 July. to 28 August-during London-Bureau Russian monitor's annual .leave. . 2. On 29 July we assumed coverage of the 2330 GMT Hanoi Domestic Service VPA program from Bangkok'Bureau due to a temporary staffing shortage there. 3. Two "Studio 9".programs, on 2 and 30 July., highlighted Russian Unit coverage for the month. B. On 2 August we-copied some of the ANTARA Indonesian transmission. STAT STAT III. ENGINEERING A. The new 280 KW generator was. tested and accepted on.15 July. B. The long-awaited replacement for the TohoDenki Hellschreiber Chinese character printer arrived at.the Bureau on,27 July. Testing of the "Newsfax" system began immediately and initial results have been spotty. System will be put on line as soon as.a couple . mechanical problems are ironed out.by the technical staff, with advice from Engineering Division. D.. A preliminary report from the Air Force antenna maintenance crew indicates that approximately 80 percent of the Bureau's antenna poles .are below Air Force climability standards. Engineering Division has been notified. complete the 100 percent design package. Upon his return to HQ, selected the chillers' compressors for the project. C. The Bureau's air conditioning project continues apace. of RECD visited the. Bureau on-25 July. to make a preliminary review o e 90 percent design package. Pan Asia Engineering has now been directed to A. Chinese Unit-Chief of U.S. Government service. B. Admin Officer 29 July.. STAT i STAT retired on 31 July after 34 years STAT departed PCS on STAT C. Admin Officer arrived PCS on 26 July. STAT D.
