Approved For Release 2008/03/19: CIA-RDP86-000408000100260010-6 31 March 1983 MNC-3026 MEMORANDUM FOR: Director, FBIS THROUGH Chief, Operations Group SUBJECT Monthly Report--Nicosia Bureau--March 1983 I. GENERAL Deputy Bureau Chief and Arabic unit chief returned from their Cair trip with a list of four good prospective Arabic monitor candidates. Although we now only have one slot open, we have placed two people in processing, the second as a hedge against the vagaries of the Cairo recruiting scene. Our first choice is again a P1ENA translator-editor. Last year, in the bureau's only previous recruiting foray into Egypt, we likewise turned up a highly qualified MENA candidate. However, she backed out at the last minute, reportedly because her employer refused to grant a leave of absence. Our number two candidate has a degree from Cairo University in economics and has spent two years at Cornell studying city planning. The Cairo trip also gave ~an opportunity to discuss with the Embassy political section the possibility o contracting with an Embassy spouse to record Cairo television. The political counselor was optimistic about finding someone willing and qualified and volunteered himself to look for the right person. The value of such an undertaking will be discussed at the forthcoming bureau chiefs conference. On the 17th, a coffee was held in the bureau conference room on the occasion of the presentation of length of service certificates to en t e certi icates were presented, at t e recipients ad a total of 140 years of service with FBIS. During the month, the editorial room was brightened with the arrival of a new editorial desk, the first of several changes planned to make the editors' work area more functional and attractive. II. OPERATIONS A. Monitorial/Editorial 1. At the request of the BBC, the bureau assumed coverage of P1oscow in Greek to Greece broadcasts 9-13 March and again 26 March - 1 April.
