MEMORANDUM FOR: Director, FBIS
THROUGH : Chief, Operations Group
SUBJECT : Monthly Report--Nicosia Bureau--June 1983
Larnaca airport was the focus of international attention on 22-23 June
when a Romanian airlines plane that had taken off from Athens airport was
hijacked by two Lebanese, who ordered the plane first to Rome for refueling
and then to Cyprus. The aircraft, which was originally bound for Libya,
landed at Larnaca after it was refused permission to land in Beirut and
began running short of fuel. The 21-hour drama ended without incident when,
after 3 hours of negotiations, the two hijackers released the plane's 32
passengers and crew and surrendered to Cypriot authorities.
Bureau employees and farewell dinner
for departing senior edito t the Cleopatra STAT
Hotel on 20 June.
A. Monitorial/Editorial
1.. As a result of Jordan Bureau's poor reception of the initial
segment of the Baghdad Voice of the PLO 1530 GMT cast, Nicosia
Bureau on the 23d assumed responsibility for filing priority and
above material from the cast until advised by Jordan that it has
taken over coverage. A Nicosia-Amman phone patch was recently
tested and found to work satisfactorily, although the absence of
direct dialing between the two cities effectively rules out this
option as a way of avoiding the split coverage arrangement.
2. A 1-week survey of the clandestine Iranian radio Nejat-e Iran
was conducted from 23 to 30 June, and it was decided to add the
radio to regular coverage.
B. Communications
1. The commercial circuit was opened from 15 to 18 STAT
June while shut down the bureau's incoming and STAT
outgoing primary circuit for testing.

C. Technical
and technical assistant) (visited the antenna site at STAT
Kili on the 24th and installed a VHF and UHF antenna to test the
possibility of recording Cairo television broadcasts from Kili.
During the 1-day survey, Cairo's channel 8 was found to offer the
best monitorability, with good to fair reception. Athens television
was also received with fair to good reception.
During their visit, the engineers also confirmed that the distortion
in the system is coming from the mains and being STAT
caused by CYTA's generating equipment. It has been decided to continue
indefinitely the use of the order wire for the Paphos to Kili connection.
