BOX 1056 KEY WEST, FLORIDA 33040 MFL--3006 7 February 1983 MEMORANDUM FOR: Director, Foreign Broadcast Information Service THROUGH Chief, Operations Group SUBJECT Monthly Report--Key West Bureau--January 1983 Some 20 inches of rain fell over a 3-4 day period during the month causing some concern, but fortunately it began just after the roof on the new construction had been completely sealed. No damage was done to the new or old structures, however, minor damage did oc- cur when an electrical discharge burned out a transistor in an an- tenna multicoupler. A. Monitorial/Editorial TDY monitor) completed his tour of ^' duty and left the bureau on 28 January. He was replaced by[ STAT from Panama. STAT B. Technical The bureau received from Headquarters two Sony Model RM-45 transcribers with foot controls, manuals and covers. A. Personnel of electronics specialist STAT is in Jackson Memorial Hospital for testing and STAT treatment of a deteriorating renal condition. The bureau staff is going all out in its attempt to help recruit monitors for the bureau. Senior monitor STAT] leaves no stone unturned, asking at his barber shop, pharmacy, etc. All possible military and other local contacts are being interrogated. Personal acquaintances in the United States and Puerto Rico are being contacted. Surprisingly enough a couple of potential monitor candi- dates have been located in this manner. B. Buildings and Grounds About 92 percent of the bureau's expansion project has been completed. Work was held up for a couple of weeks by tor- rential rains and cold weather. Their maSTAT interest was the bureau's present and future coverage of Cuba and In addition, two officers from the Office of Safety inspected the bureau for potential safety hazards as a part of an annual inspection program.
