SUBJECT Monthly Report--Key West Bureau--December 1983
Strict enforcement of security regulations is continuing
at Key West Naval Air Station.
A. Monitorial/Editorial
Eighteen-hour coverage of Havana telecasts on weekends
was added to the bureau coverage, following the installation of
a Sony SL-2500 Betamax video cassette recorder. Recorded weekend
programs are being scanned first thing Monday mornings.
Final preparations for implementing new monitoring system
were discussed in a staff meeting on 30 December. Beginning on
1 January, Key West Bureau monitor/editors wdll_a_r_e-s_ummari~s
for a,11 programs on coverage, as is the practice in other bureaus.
It is expected that Cuba will celebrate the 25th
anniversary of the revolution's triumph with several ceremonies
in cities located in the eastern part of the island. Raul Castro
was the keynote speaker at the inauguration of a sugar mill in
Santa Cruz del Sur on 31 December, and Fidel Castro will probably
address the main commemoration on 1 January in Santiago de Cuba.
B. Communications
Coverage of Dominican and Jamaican radio stations has
deteriorated in the latter part of December. News-type programs
during morning and evening hours appear to be fading in several
weeks later this fall/winter season, compared to last year.
C. Technical
A Sony SL-2500 Compact Betamax video cassette recorder
and a Sony AG-400 Beta Stack Autochanger were incorporated in the
video system. VHF and video patch fields in the video console
were reconfigured accordingly.

Fourteen-year-old, inaccurate Intermatic mechanical
timers in monitoring room were replaced by AKAI solid-state timers,
eliminating the need for constant adjustment and ensuring that
programs are correctly recorded.
The bureau received two Collins receivers, Model 651S-1A,
serial nos. 97 and 2470, with rack mounting adaptors.
A. Personnel
became the newest monitor/editor on
chief SDS, and
of the Personnel and raining Branch visited the bureau on 6 and
7 December.
