A. Monitorial/Editorial
1. On 7 February the Iranians launched a new offensive
against Iraq in the Ash-Shib region. However, the Iraqis
"succeeded. in checking the enemy and in containing and completely
destroying its. offensive," according to the Bureau's initial
report on the new offensive, which was monitored from Baghdad
Voice of the Masses at 0629 GMT. Jordan and Gulf Bureaus later
received an admin from the Wire praising the bureaus for their
prompt reporting and noting that it enabled "late items" to be
written for "very high-level consumer publications."

2. Effective 16 February the Bureau placed Jerusalem Arabic
0530 and 1130 GMT newscasts and Jerusalem Arabic 1730 GMT

be worthwhile to add any or all of these programs to our regular
Jerusalem Arabic coverage.
B. Lateral Services
1. American Embassy Amman, which.is already receiving a very
large volume of FBIS material, asked to begin receiving all processed
items from Moscow's Arabic-language broadcasts--both Moscow Radio

to London Bureau.

session of the Palestine National Council, held in Algiers, was
of particular interest to the Embassy in Amman in light of Admini-
stration efforts to draw King Husayn into the current peace process.
The several takes of material filed by London Bureau from Algiers
Radio, followed by comparison FYIs to provide the full, official
text, were well received by the. Embassy. The Bureau provided extra
copies to Embassy consumers as needed.
