SUBJECT: Monthly Report--Jordan Bureau--June 1983
Much of the bureau's file this month was generated by the
continuing mutiny within the main faction of the PLO, the Fatah
movement and the numerous charges of Syrian and Libyan involvement
in it. Along with an escalation of the fighting between the
dissidents and mainstream forces, there were extensive contacts and
travels by various Arab leaders including 'Arafat and Al-Qadhdhafi.
The Fatah central committee and the revolutionary council also met
and on the 24th 'Arafat was informed of the Syrian authorities' desire
for him to leave the country. He departed immediately for Tunis.
A. Editorial/monitorial
The Bureau's reception of Baghdad Voice of PLO has precluded coverage
of the beginning portion of the program ever since the radio expanded
its transmission from 1600-1700 GMT to 1530-1700 GMT. Nicosia's
reception of the initial portion of the program has been better than
Jordan's with the result that since 23 June we have been splitting
coverage of this program. Nicosia covers the program from sign-on
until advised by Jordan that we can assume coverage, usually shortly
after 1600 GMT.
In response to a request from London Bureau we pouched four
videotapes, two from Damascus television and two from Amman television,
for a BBC consumer who had requested Arabic video recordings.
