SUBJECT: Monthly Report -- Hong Kong Bureau -- January 1983
I. OPERATIONS
A. Editorial/Monitorial
Provincial Newspapers -- As of the beginning of January, PRC,
provincial newspapers are no longer available in Hong Kong on a daily
basis. Instead, monthly bound volumes will be sent to subscribers. None
of the bureau's subscriptions are affected since all our provincial papers
are ordered direct airmail from Beijing, but TIANJIN RIBAO, which Seoul
Bureau receives from a Hong Kong distributor, has not been received this
month. The bureau has asked the embassy in Beijing to enter an airmail
subscription to TIANJIN RIBAO, which we will then forward to Seoul for
processing.
II. ADMINISTRATION
A. Personnel
Monitor Recruitment -- The bureau has just completed a recruitment
campaign for monitors. Five candidates have been selected for processing.
Two are long-time contract translators. If all are brought on board, it
will be the first time the bureau's monitorial TO has been filled.
Associate Editor Positions -- Associate edito
who has been at the bureau since September, is res
ning in e ruary to
return to the UK. The bureau is currently interviewing and testing
applicants to fill her job and a third associate editor position.
