SUBJECT Monthly Report--Gulf Bureau-April 1983
The bureau's extensive efforts to cover Tehran television
finally began to pay dividends at the end of the month when
Tehran began broadcasting the "confessions" of the leaders of
the Soviet-backed Tudeh Party. The series of taped interviews
provided a detailed look at Soviet espionage activities in Iran
over the last 40 years.
The bureau engineer has played a key role in our capability
to receive Tehran television, aligning antennas and adding additional
amplifiers to boost a signal originating nearly 200 miles away.
II. OPERATIONS
A. Editorial/Monitorial
In attention to the increased coverage of Tehran television,
the bureau monitored the first Iranian reports of the start of
yet another offensive on 11 April. Coverage of the offensive
involved extensive backstop support for the BBC because of its
reception difficulties.
The bureau completed another survey of Russian regional
radios to ascertain reception and possible additions to coverage.
One immediate result has been the addition of Baku domestic Azeri
newscasts. Since the start of the year, the Central Asian section
has added six Soviet regional newscasts to the bureau's coverage.
III. VISITS
To the Bureau:
1. Lt. David Funsch, U.S. Navy, to instruct bureau staff
on use of life support equipment. (April 19)
