SUBJECT Monthly Report--Gulf Bureau-May 1983
Gulf Bureau continued to expand its staff with the
successful recruitment of a highly qualified Russian/Arabic
monitor to assist in both languages. This new monitor will
effectively permit the bureau to go to 7-day coverage of
the currently covered Russian-language programs, speed
processing and in general solidify the bureau's commitment
to its Russian mission. Our next step will be to seek out
candidates to handle the Soviet Turkmen-based languages to
take full advantage of the bureau's solid reception of these //
Russian regional languages, thus enhancing coverage of this
vital area.
The INTERNET survey team selected the U.S. embassy
grounds as the best site for the satellite antenna, dis-
counting the bureau roof because of high noise levels and
possible structural problems. The dish, to be located on
the grounds just outside of the ambassador's office.
II. OPERATIONS
A. Editorial/Monitorial
May was a busy month operationally led by the
expulsion of Soviet diplomats from Iran in response to
the Iranian dissolution of the Tudeh Party. The bureau's
IRNA coverage first carried the names and position of the
Soviet officials declared persona non grata. In other
developments related to Iran, the bureau covered yet another
mediation effort to end the Gulf war--this time undertaken
by the Kuwaiti and UAE foreign ministers; and the hijacking
of two Iranian aircrafts to Oman by Iranian servicemen
seeking asylum.

Thanks to its coverage of Riyadh television, the
bureau was able to quickly refute a U.S. news agency report
that Saudi King Fahd was dead, supplying visual confirmation
to the Wire and other consumers that the King was indeed
alive and well.
At the request of London Bureau's Press Monitoring
Unit, the bureau assumed coverage of the Russian-language
Yerevan KOMMUNIST newspaper which will complement our present
handling of the Armenian-language press from Soviet Armenia.
