SUBJECT Monthly Report--Gulf Bureau-July 1983
The attention of the Embassy and the local media during
much of the month was devoted to the Bahraini Amir's 18-22 July
official state visit to the United States. The visit marks the
first time a ruler of Bahrain has met with a serving U.S.
President. Ambassador Sutherland, who accompanied the Amir,
reported that the visit went flawlessly, while local media
hailed it as highly successful.
In addition to the oil slick, another unfortunate side
effect of the Iran-Iraq War is now threatening the Gulf area.
Drifting explosive mines from the war zone have been sighted
in area waters during the month. According to the latest
reports from Lloyds of London, two of these mines have been
washed ashore on the Saudi coast and a third is afloat in
nearby Gulf waters.
II. OPERATIONS
A. Editorial/Monitorial
1. On 17 July Gulf Bureau began trial coverage of a
large percentage of the BBC's Riyadh Radio commitment. Upon
completion of the 2-month trial period, the Bureau will report
to Headquarters on the impact of this additional coverage.
2. The Persian team was busy during the month. To
assist Tel Aviv during the leave of its Persian monitor, Gulf
assumed coverage of NVOI and Moscow Dari broadcasts. The team
also completed a survey of Jerusalem Persian newscasts in
response to a consumer request. The survey showed the broad-
casts to be unproductive and not worth regular coverage. Late
in the month, the team earned a message of "warm appreciation"
from the BBC for its initial reporting on the latest Iranian
offensive against Iraq.
