SUBJECT Monthly Report--Austrian Bureau--January 1983
A. Monitorial/Editorial
1. The bureau's new Russian-language program got off the ground
this month as the first of two new monitors, jo:STAT
us on 10 January. native speaker who only left Leningrad a rew
years ago, she has been fully occupied in her first couple of
weeks learning all about FBIS style and format. In the meantime,
Chief Monitor has tentatively filled the ot1STAT
slot by offering the job to another promising young lady whom
we hope to hear from in early February.
2. We also resumed full responsibility for Ukraine press and
radio coverage this month after a break of almost two years
/ when our Ukraine monitor, was assigned tbSTAT:
Polish section.
B. Communications
Our techs busied themselves throughout the month in a major re-
wiring job in preparation for switching our communications sys-
tem from the Autodin system to the new State primary circuit.
With most of the work finished and barebones equipment in place,
v1 we are now looking forward to the CPU people making their re-
programming changes in February so we can begin testing between
the bureau and the embassy. Actual switchover will depend on the
arrival of additional tone-keyer cards which are now scheduled
to get here in late March.
A. Personnel
1. Slipping away in his normally quiet way, senior tech
STAT
bid farewell to over 33 years service with FBIS (1STAT1-
ning in Salzburg) as he retired on the last day of the month,
just a day short of his 65th birthday. We convinced him that he
couldn't begin all those chores on his cottage in Reichenau
near Semmering until he agreed to let us schedule an early
February proper "Heuriger" sendoff.
2. German monitor continued her rise within STAT
ranks as well as the pay scale as she was promoted to FSN-9
on 9 January, her second promotion since joining us two years ago.

Bureau personnel had a preview viewing-this month of any
slides that Czech monitor and "meister" photographer STAT
had taken of all of us as part of a HQs request for STAT
photographs of each bureau. nin which poses were mu L

to stage a few "special" shots to be included in a lighthearted
album which we hope to have ready for pouching sometime in
February.
