During 1974, Chile will import substantial amounts of foodstuffs and some manufactured consumer goods. Foodstuff imports are expected to reach $500-600 million. China is a large exporter of many of the commodities Chile will import, including rice and some canned foods, such as chicken and pork. Because of rapidly rising import prices, the market for low-cost Chinese manufactured goods, including textiles, household utensils, and hand tools, in Chile is greatly enhanced. Chile's chief exports to China are copper, nitrates, and iodine. Copper is exported under a 1971-75 trade agreement signed by the former Chilean government and the PRC which apparently remains in force under the new government. During 1973, copper exports to China are estimated at about $100 million. Chile is?also an important source of granulated sodium nitrates, potassium sodium nitrates, crystallized sodium nitrates and one of the world's major suppliers of iodine.
