Reporting on as of 30 November 1983 the overall magnitude of these declines has been widespread, but there has was used in this report. been very little on the composition of the declines. The principal reason for this gap in information is that most LDCs do not provide detailed trade statistics on a timely basis. To examine the composition of these export and import reductions, we have relied upon the trade statistics of major industrial countries-. the United States, Japan, and West Germany. These three countries account for about 40 percent of the total imports of the 15 key debt-troubled LDCs and nearly 50 percent of their exports.' Industrial country trade statistics show: ? The largest decline in LDC imports has been in manufactures. They accounted for 83 percent of the nearly $13 billion drop in Big Three sales to these countries in 1982. ? Machinery and transport equipment have accounted for two-thirds of the drop in imports of manufactures. ? Most of the remaining decline was in sales of foodstuffs and raw As far as LDC exports are concerned, most of the reduction has been in fu- els: ? The falloff in fuel exports accounted for 70 percent of last year's export decline. ? Reduced exports of foodstuffs and raw materials made up the remainder, reflecting lower sales by countries such as Brazil and the Philippines ' The key debt-troubled LDCs include Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Indonesia, the Ivory Coast, Kenya, Mexico, Morocco, Nigeria, Peru, the Philippines, Venezuela, and Zaire.0 ] Except where noted, all export data are on an f.o.b. basis while all import data are on a c.i.f. basis. iii Confidential GI 84-10030 February 1984 25X1 25X1 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/03/02 : CIA-RDP85T00283R000400110004-8 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/03/02 : CIA-RDP85TOO283ROO0400110004-8 Table 1 Key Debt-Troubled LDCs: Composition of Imports From Major Industrial Countries 1.8 1.4 0.8 0.6 0.9 1.8 1.2 0.5 51.5 40.8 22.3 14.0 Chemicals 6.7 5.9 3.0 2.7 Semifinished goods 9.4 7.5 4.3 2.2 Machinery 20.8 17.2 9.3 5.6 Transport equipment 10.5 6.9 4.1 2.6 Consumer goods 4.2 3.3 1.6 1.0 Other 0.7 0.4 0.2 0.2 Table 2 Key Debt-Troubled LDCs: Composition of Exports to Major Industrial Countries 1982 1983 Total trade 73.9 68.6 34.1 32.4 Foodstuffs 10.0 9.1 4.8 5.1 Raw materials 9.2 8.1 4.1 4.1 Fuels 44.3 40.6 19.6 17.9 Manufactures 9.4 9.8 4.9 4.8 Chemicals 0.8 0.8 0.4 6.3 Semifinished goods 2.0 2.1 1.1 1.1 Machinery 3.5 3.8 1.8 2.1 Transport equipment 0.5 0.5 0.3 0.3 Consumer goods 2.5 2.5 1.3 0.7 Other 1.0 1.1 0.6 0.5 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/03/02 : CIA-RDP85TOO283ROO0400110004-8 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/03/02 CIA-RDP85T00283R000400110004-8 1.
