SUBJECT: Briefing Note on IAC-D-53/9 for IAC Meeting,
10 December 1957
1. This memorandum provides, for your information, a brief
statement on the Fifth Annual Progress Report of the Economic
Defense Intelligence Committee which is placed before the IAC for
noting. It is expected that the EDIC Chairman,
will be present at the IAC Meeting.
2. This Committee (EDIC) is responsible for intelligence
support to the Economic Defense Advisory Committee (EDAC) and
for coordination of intelligence for the economic defense program.
EDIC's formal activities were somewhat reduced during 1956/57
because of the extended review of US policy on multilateral trade
controls against Communist China and the European Soviet Bloc.
Nevertheless, very substantial intelligence support was rendered
by IAC agencies represented on EDIC through direct contributions
to EDAC , its subcommittees, and its working groups. The EDIC
Chairman, as CIA member of the EDAC Executive Committee,

participated in CHINCOM discussions in Paris in May 1957.
3. EDIC will participate in ODMts emergency planning for
economic warfare. EDIC will continue to arrange for intelligence
research in support of multilateral trade control review this winter
and will focus on items of importance to the Bloc because of new
scientific and technological developments.
