Annual Report to the NSC on the Status of the Foreign Intelligence Program (IAC-D-55/11.2, 7 August) a. Approved this report. b. Mr. Dulles and the members discussed briefly certain matters relevant to the three-year fiscal projection, which constitutes an annex to this report. Release of SNIE 30-3-56 Nasser and the Middle East Situation a. Agreed to release this estimate to USIA (IAC-M-250, 2 August 1956, Secretary's Note 4; and IAC-M-251, 7 August 1956, item 3). 25X1 7. NIE 72-56 Conditions and Trends in Tropical Africa a. Approved as amended. b. Noted. the findings, and approved the recommendations of the post-mortem on this estimate. In this connection, Mr. Dulles stressed the necessity of stepping up intelligence activities in this area. During the course of a discussion. of this matter, Mr. Armstrong noted that the opening of four new foreign service posts should im- prove political reporting from this part of Africa, and General Schow referred to certain new activities which the Army was undertaking in Africa.
