1. SIGNIFICANCE: FIRST IDENTIFICATION OF BOX TOP AUTOMATIC HIGH
FREQUENCY RADIO INTERCEPT/DIRECTION FINDING STATIONS IN
AFGHANISTAN. (SWN)
2. REMARKS: THE INTERCEPT DEPLOYMENT, WHICH HAS OCCURRED SINCE
CONSISTS OF MAJOR ELEMENTS OF A RADIO INTERCEPT
REGIMENT. EQUIPMENT INCLUDES 10 BOX TOP STATIONS WHICH ARE
PARALLEL TO 14 VAN TRUCK, ONE PROBABLE COMPUTER/ELECTRONICS
TRAILER, AND SIX OTHER VEHICLES IN A SCREENED AREA. TWO TALL
RODS ANTENNA ARRAYS ARE NEAR THE BOX TOP VEHICLES. TWO OTHER
SCREENED AREAS ARE ALSO PRESENT, ONE WITH 10 VAN TRUCKS AND
ANOTHER WITH AT LEAST SEVEN PROBABLE EXPANDABLE VAN TRUCKS AND
AN EXTENSIVE TENT LAYOUT. MOST OF THE VEHICLES ARE NET
COVERED. THE REMAINDER OF THE COMPLEX CONSISTS CF A SECURITY
UNIT, SEVERAL 40--MAN TENTS, AND SUPPORT VEHICLES.. (EWN)
THE DEPLOYMENT OF THE BOX TOP SYSTEM, WHICH IS A FRONT LEVEL
ASSET, WILL IMPROVE THE SOVIET' ABILITY TO INTERCEPT AND
LOCATE INSURGENT FORCE. (SWN)
