1. SIGNIFICANCE: THIS IS THE FIRST OBSERVATION OF THIS MOBILE CRUISE
MISSILE LAUNCH SYSTEM OUTSIDE OF THE NAVAL WEAPONS RESEARCH AND
DEVELOPMENT CENTER AT JINXI. (SWN)
2. REMARKS: ONE BATTERY OF THE NEWLY-DEVELOPED MOBILE LAUNCHERS FOR THE
CHINESE STYX CRUISE MISSILE SYSTEM WAS CONFIRMED AT TUCHENGZI AIRFIELD ON
MOBILE CRUISE MISSILE LAUNCH SYSTEM
GRAPHIC 1). THE BATTERY APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN AT THIS
NAVAL EARLY AS JULY 1983. IT INCLUDED FOUR TRACKED
LAUNCHERS, ONE TRACKED ACQUISITION RADAR VEHICLE, AND ONE
COMPUTER/ELECTRONICS VAN TRUCK. (SWN)
THE EQUIPMENT WAS NOT OPERATIONALLY DEPLOYED, BUT WAS PARKED
IN A DISPLAY/DEMONSTRATION CONFIGURATION. THE FOUR CANVAS-COVERED
LAUNCHERS WERE PARKED IN A STRAIGHT LINE WITH THE CANVAS-COVERED
ACQUISITION RADAR VEHICLE AND THE COMPUTER/ELECTRONICS VAN TRUCK
CENTRALLY PARKED TO THE REAR OF THE LAUNCHERS. (SWN)
THIS CRUISE MISSILE LAUNCH SYSTEM WAS DEVELOPED AT THE JINXI NVL WPNS
R/D/TNG COMPLEX SSM OPERATIONAL 25X1
TESTING OF THE SYSTEM OCCURRED DURING OCTOBER AND NOVEMBER 1982. THE
BATTERY OBSERVED AT JINXI INCLUDED FOUR MOBILE LAUNCHERS, ONE ELECTRONICS
VAN TRUCK, AND ONE SQUARE TIE RADAR MOUNTED ON AN UNIDENTIFIED TRACKED
CHASSIS. THE MOBILE LAUNCHER CONSISTS OF A SINGLE STYX LAUNCH RAIL
MOUNTED ON A TYPE 63 TANK CHASSIS (GRAPHIC 2). (SWN) I 25X1
