@CUBA-ANGOLA: Student Riot
The 2,000 Angolan students in Cuba reportedly ar
e
being
sent home following a violent uprising last mon
th
at the
ir training site on the Isle of Youth. Five pe
ople,
includ
ing Cubans and Angolans, were killed in the rio
t,
which
protested study conditions and manual labor req
uire-
ments.
The incident, which is the most serious of
many problems involving foreign students on the island,
may add to the tensions felt by the Angolan populace over
the Cuban presence in Angola. President Castro's quick
agreement to send the students home reflects his exasper-
ation with what once had been a source of pride. It also
underscores mounting frustrations after almost eight
years of Cuban assistance to Angola.
