1. SIGNIFICANCE: TWO CHINESE-BUILT R-CLASS ATTACK SUBMARINES (SS)
HAVE BEEN DELIVERED TO EGYPT SINCE (SWN) 25X1
2. REMARKS: THE TWO SUBMARINES ARE BERTHED AT THE CENTRAL MOLE
WHICH IS OFTEN USED FOR CEREMONIAL PURPOSES. THESE SUBMARINES
WERE SHIPPED FROM QINGDAO SUBMARINE BASE , CHINA 25X1
IN THE WELL DECK OF THE "HONGHEKOU", A FLOAT ON/FLOAT OFF
(FLO/FLO) MERSHIP. THE FLO/FLO, WITH KEEL BLOCKS STILL IN
PLACE IN THE WELL DECK, IS NOW MOORED AT THE COALING QUAY AT
THE NEARBY AL ISKANDARIYAH PORT FACILITIES 25X1
A FLOATING CRANE IS ALONGSIDE THE FLO/FLO AND APPEARS TO BE
REARRANGING THE KEEL BLOCK PATTERN. (SWN)
THE "HONGHEKOU" DEPARTED QINGDAO BETWEEN
AFTER APPARENT TURN-OVER CEREMONIES THERE.
TO DATE, FOUR R SS HAVE BEEN DELIVERED TO EGYPT AS PART OF A
CONTINUING CONTRACT WITH CHINA FOR PURCHASE OF NAVAL VESSELS.
