CHANGONGO MILITARY AREA, ANGOLA
1. SIGNIFICANCE: SOUTH AFRICAN ENGINEERS ARE REPAIRING THE
HIGHWAY BRIDGE SPANNING THE PIC CUNENE IN THE CHANGONGO
MILITARY AREA. (SWN)
2. REMARKS: REPAIR WORK, WHICH APPEARS TO BE LIMITED TO MAKING
THE HIGHWAY BRIDGE SERVICEABLE FOR CROSSINGS, IS EVIDENT ON THE
SPAN CLOSEST TO CHANGONCO. AT LEAST FOUR VEHICLES ARE ON THE
SHORELINE OPPOSITE THE MILITARY CAMP. THE BRIDGE WAS DESTROYED
BY SOUTH AFRICAN FORCES WHEN OPERATION PROTEA CONCLUDED IN
AUGUST 1981. (SWN)
ELEMENTS OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN BATTLE GROUP, WHICH HAD BEEN
OBSERVED ARE NOT IN THE VICINITY OF THE 25X1
FORMER PORTUGUESE FORT AND MAY BE ENGAGED IN ROUTINE PATROL.
FOUR NEWLY ERECTED TENTS ARE NEARBY. (SWN)
CHANGONGO MILITARY AREA IS IN THE CUNENE PROVINCE OF
SOUTH-CENTRAL ANGOLA, APPROXIMATELY 47 NM NORTHWEST OF NGIVA
AND 40 NM NORTH OF THE ANGOLA-NAMIBIA BORDER. (SWN)
