MEMORANDUM FOR:
FROM Director, Office of External Affairs
SUBJECT : SASC Worldwide Intelligence Briefing
1. The DCI is scheduled to appear before the Senate Armed Services
Committee (SASC) on 1 February 1982 as part of the Committee's posture
hearings in review of the defense authorization request for FY83. The
briefing is scheduled to begin at 1000 hours in room S-407, The Capitol.
A transcript will be taken.
2. As mentioned in the Committee's letter dated 8 January 1982, the
primary purpose of the worldwide briefing is to identify long-term worldwide
and regional military, political and economic trends affecting U.S. security.
The secondary purpose is to receive information on current worldwide security
events and problems.
3. In light of these guidelines, the following is a list of priorities
that the Committee has identified by topic and region:
a. USSR - Still Principal Threat
Military strength (conventional/nuclear)
- Economic problems
- Political forecast
- Foreign policies
- U.S./arms negotiations
- Europe (East and West)
- Third World
- Technology race
-Possible breakthroughs (space, lasers, armor countermeasures
and air defense, etc.)
b. Europe - Soviet role in supporting "Peace movements" in various
European countries
- INF/Negotiations/Reactions
- Poland
- Greece
- Spain
c. Middle East
--Libya/Terrorism
- Morocco/Western Sahara dispute
- Egypt
- Persian Gulf/Gulf cooperation council
Lebanon elections and Syrian/Israeli dispute
