D.C. 20510 December 22, 1982 Oxr4 kz - 2fl() 82- 3046 Arms Control Intelligence Staff Directorate of Intelligence Central Intelligence Agency Washington, D.C. Director Dear Mr. George: On behalf of Senator Goldwater and the other mbers of the Committee we would like to thank you, and the other CIA analysts for coming down on such short notice last week to give us further insights into the problems of monitor- ing intermediate-range nuclear forces. As was mentioned at the end of the briefing, we have a number of questions that we would like you to answer for the record. We have divided these questions into two groups. We have asked Ambassador Nitze and his staff to answer questions 1 - 13. We felt that the Arms Control Intelligence staff would be best able to answer questions 14 - 19. Senator Leahy has also submitted several additional questions to Ambassador Nitze, including one which may require some coordination between ACDA and CIA. We have provided both you and Ambassador Nitze with a full set of questions in order to facilitate any coordination. As we mentioned to Ambassador Nitze, we would like to receive responses to these questions before the INF negotiations reconvene on 27 January 1983. However, we are willing to work out a mutually-agreeable schedule should this prove impossible. If you have any questions in developing your responses to these questions, please contact Stephen J. Flanagan of our staff at 224-1700. 0 Daniel Patrick M ynihan Vice-Chairman J h H. Chafee SPUFT R ing Majority Member Approved For Release 2008/04/24: CIA-RDP84BOO148R000500980016-8
