New York (UPI) -- Clandestine radio reports intercepted by U.S.
destroyers off Nicaragua show that guerrillas in El Salvador are
directed from a command post on the outskirts of Managua, NEWSWEEK
magazine said Sunday.
The magazine said the guerrillas report their positions and
actions to the command post, which in turn sends details of impending
arms deliveries.
NEWSWEEK said U.S. destroyers positioned off Nicaragua's Pacific
coast since January have intercepted radio reports that pinpoint
several clandestine transmitters in Nicaragua, including a major
command post for Salvadoran rebels outside Managua.
According to NEWSWEEK's March 22 issue, agents watching the
command post have reported the presence of both Nicaraguan and Cuban
advisers inside the building.
The Caron, one of the largest destroyers in the American fleet,
currently is monitoring Nicaragua with a supersensitive radio
direction-finding system, NEWSWEEK said. Intelligence operatives call
the rig a "classic outboard" -- a network of wires strung down the
entire length of the ship.
NEWSWEEK also reported that two Nicaraguan Air Force pilots who
hijacked a transport plane to Honduras maintain the Soviets are
heavily involved in Nicaragua and that the Sandinistas push dissident
Miskito Indians out of airplanes.
