INTRODUCTION
The history of the Intellofax System encompasses many facets
of the information storage and retrieval system of the Office of Collection
and Dissemination (OCD) and its successors the Office of Cent r fsrencs

(OCR), Two 4W Divisionss the Machine !'~Divis:JV (Central Index until
Moor 1948 and~Machine Methods Divis untilSeptembe 151) and the CIA
Library (Intelligence Document Divisio (Until Y., 1.148 were responsible
for the development and operation of the Electrid''ACCOUnting Machine
(E-M)-supported document storage, reference, and retrieval system. The Office
reorganization of November 1956 added a third layer of responsibility-"a
now Documeht Divieion(bb,
This history covers all alspects of the Intellofaa system from
1947 until its demise in 1967:' equipment developments and Improvement,
including mierafilmiflgs print servioeiand fast transmission of data]
classification input sabamsj and retrieval. A project that had also
impact on the Intellofax System but was not a dopted--M#*-"A discussed
in detail.
The Intelligence Publications Index (IPI)s the printed index
of finished intelligence documehtss is historically part of OCD/OCRs
information storage and retrieval system andiGherefore appears in this
chapter with the Intellofax 6ystem.
