The system update contains performance enhancements. It is the operating system that is required for the new processor that will arrive later this month. The Ruffing Center had an average week for applications availability, with problems heavily concentrated on Thursday. GIMDEV lost 99 minutes due to paging pack problems and incompleted I/O operations on two computer channels. RECON lost 82 minutes, Thursday, due to faulty MVS software. The Batch system had 68 minutes of lost time, Thursday, due to a Telex disk controller problem, a tape drive problem, and two IBM 3033 failures caused by a marginal IBM circuit breaker. On Monday, GIMDEV lost 114 minutes due to apparent JES software errors; a main storage fault in the IBM 168-3 was discovered that may have contributed to the problems. Sunday evening, the Amdahl 470/V6 began experiencing channel problems, which continued through Monday - the computer was given to Amdahl for diagnostics and was down through Tuesday. The Special Center had a substandard week. CAMS failed five times for a loss of three hours, Wednesday, due to its software, a DBCC mistake, and an Amdahl memory failure. STAR and NIPS also lost 48 minutes apiece when an Amdahl 470/V6 hung, possibly due to a SPD software problem. Applications software hangs cost NIPS 2-1/2 hours Thursday. STAR lost an hour, Saturday, due to a Telex disk drive problem. CAMS lost 81 minutes, Monday, due to an Amdahl 470/V6 console hang, which was apparently cured by reseating some memory cards in the computer An OC/ODP Task Force did a line-by-line check ati on 9-10 November in order to isolate any device or line problems. They uncovered some line problems and one or two device problems which are currently being addressed. No major difficulties were encountered.
