MONITORABILITY SURVEY - ISLAMABAD (PAKISTAN) The monitorability and programme schedule survey carried out at the FBIS bureau in Islamabad from 4th to 10th October 1980 inclusive dealt solely with broadcasting stations located in Afghanistan, Iran and the USSR. No attempt was made to cover broadcasting stations in China, the Persian Gulf area, India or Pakistan. The main findings of the survey can be summarized as follows: AFGHANISTAN First Programme (Pashto/Dari) Domestic Service (Shortwave) (Mediutnwave) External Service (Urdu, Pashto) (Russian) Second Programme (vernaculars) Fair reception External Service (to South Asia) Fair reception (to Middle East & Not monitorable Europe) Good to excellent monitorability Reception worse than at Caversham Monitorable during darkness only (1500-0100) Fair reception Not audible Monitorability is restricted to radio stations located in five of the Soviet Central Asian Republics (namely the Kazakh, Kirghiz, Tadzhik, Turkmen and Uzbek SSRs). Three of the Soviet republican radios (Kazakh, Tadzhik and Uzbek) are monitorable throughout the broadcasting day. Programmes from the radios of the Kirghiz and Turkmen SSRs, however, are AL monitorable only during periods of darkness) dawn and twilight. Radio stations broadcasting in the RSFSR, Georgian, Azerbaijani and Armenian Republics were either not traced or not monitorable when programmes of interest to FBIS and the BBCMS are broadcast. AFGHANI STAN Radio Afghanistan's domestic service First Programme is on the air daily with programmes in Pashto and Dari from 0125-1930. It is available on some seven shortwave channels, one single sideband feeder afd several mediumwave channeels. Overall monitorability varies from good to excellent throughout even during periods of high static and local tropical storms. The range of frequencies available also means that minor ionospheric disturbances will have little affect on monitorability. The two mediumwave frequencies for the Kabul area (1278 and 657 kHz) are audible and monitorable throughout the broadcast day. Other mediumwave channels are heard only during periods of darkness. The three Radio Afghanistan regional stations in Herat, Kandahar and Mazar-i-Sharif were traced on 909, 864 and 621 (not 630 kHz) respectively. However, they were heard only during the period of darkness. They were not of monitorable quality and were, when detected,in parallel with the First Programme from Kabul. Radio Afghanistan's Second Programme is broadcast daily from 1100-1625 on one short-wave frequency (6230 kHz). This service contains programmes in Nuristani, Turkmen, Uzbek, Urdu, English and Baluchi. The programmes in Urdu and English are also aimed at listeners in neighbouring countries. The monitorability of this service is generally fair. Radio Afghanistan's external service programme in Russian, Arabic, Pashto/Dari, German and English beamed to the Middle East and Europe were not heard during the Islamabad survey. ... .. .. .. .......................................................................................................----------- ............ . _.......---- - -------- -------- ..........................._.................... ---- - ...
