During July, began writing chapters
25X1 of thel history. He plans to interview
on Martha's Vineyard during August. We have agreed that he'll
complete a first draft by the end of the year and then move
on to another topic.
25X1 During July, emerged with a comprehensive
chronology on Vietnam which I believe we could produce as a
service to many people both inside and outside the Agency.
We know of nothing comparable to it in existence.
25X1 I continues to be most painstaking and
conscientious in his research.
25X1 I completed her basic research on James
R. Schlesinger as DCI. I reviewed it during July. It provides
a usable skeleton, but no meat. I'll talk to Duckett about
this.

in June. He left without a word and without having written
a thing on Nationalist China. He claims that EA division
never responded to a request for cooperation. He's wrong
about that. I've put a memorandum for the record in his file
and retired the file.

Sherm Kent is on leave for the summer.
Dave Phillips assigned to write the 25X1
History of the 1954 Guatemala operation. Within days after
Lou and I talked, he suffered a heart attack. The prognosis
is guarded.
As you know, there are two proposals on their way to
the DCI which, singly or together, will have a major impact
on the history program. A decision to make histories more
accessible internally and externally will impose a challenging
work load on the staff, particularly its chief. He plans
personally to push internal dissemination and has always
assigned himself the task of seeing to the re-writing,
santitizing, coordinating, and releasing the U-2 history.
Component histories continue to wander in, and they
are edited, typed, and covered by the staff.
During July, there was nothing to report on space,
on integrating with archives. No responses were received on
an intelligence museum collection.
2. Ad Hockery
During July, Ray Cline and his research assistant were
notified that their security clearances had been approved.
We can expect them to start rummaging around any day now.
July was something of a medical month. lost
the tip of a finger in a slammed car door.
tennised his knee into a cast. had a heart attack.
The Director of Training and I conferred and agreed
that neither of us was getting his money's worth out of Pat
25X1 We recognized the overriding medical factor. Rod
i talk to John Tietjen. We will then decide what to do

On 31 July, Pforzheimer signed his contract. I made
the three-months review stipulation very clear to him.

On 30 July, agreed that DD/M&S will
pick her up on the understanding that she should count on
retiring no later than 30 June 1975. She seems quite
amenable on this. I'll put it in writing for her to sign.
