The writer has investigated the oxidation of petroleum
hydrocarbons. At low temperatures, photochemical
reactions give hydroper=ddes. TbLee give aidehydes
when the temperature rises. When higher hydrocar-
bons are oxidized. hydroperoxide radicals may be

take place without any energy of activation, through

chain reactions are practically identical with those ex-
pressing the autocoulytic action of the final products.
The similarity is a purely superficial one, since the
final products do not actually accelerate simple chain
