Approved For Release 21/08/07 ?EA-RDP84-003138000100114007-2 L~~ (p " 1966 MEMORANDUM FOR: Executive Director-Comptroller THROUGH : Deputy Director for SupporIg 2 6 JAN 1966 SUBJECT : Engineers' Week - Nomination for Awards 1. This memorandum transmits a letter for your signature in reply to a letter from Mr. John M. Ide, National Science Foundation. 2. The attached letter from Mr_. Ide solicits nominations of young men in the fields of engineering, architecture, and scientific activities for special recognition during Engineers' Week. The Agency made no 2.1A nominations last year. The previous year OSA was nominated, but not selected as an award winner, e gency's candidate an architect in the office of Logistics, received the 1961 National Capital Award. 3. We forwarded a copy of the letter from Mr. Ide to the four Deputy Directors and requested nominations. The Deputy Director for Science and Technology named an outstanding GS-15 physical scientist in the Office of Special Projects, as a potential candi- date for the National Capital Award, would be an excellent candidate, but the sensitivity of his work in the Agency limits us at this time from giving enough information to justify his consideration as a candidate for public recognition during Engineers' Week. No other Agency candidates were named. It is recommended that you sign the attached letter advising Mr. Ide that the Agency will not nominate a candidate this year. The deadline date for submission of nominations is 28 January 1966. 2.1A ---Emmett D. S. KELLEHER Engineering Division National Science Foundation 1800 G St., N. W. Washington, D. C. 20550 Telephone: 343-7651 TO: Engineering Organizations in the Washington, D. C. Area You are invited to nominate a staff member from your organization for special recognition during Engineers' Week. A similar invitation is being extended to other organizations having engineering, architectural, or scientific activities in the Metropoli- tan Washington area. Three young professional men, one architect, one applied scientist, and one engineer, will be honored on February 23, 1966 as part of the contribution of the D. C. Council of Engineering and Architectural Societies and the Washington Academy of Sciences to the nation-wide observance of Engineers' Week. Nominations must be received no later than January 28, 1966. The major objective of the program is the development of professional and public awareness of the contributions made by younger members of these professions and a stimulation of interest in the engineering, architectural and scientific areas by young people who are preparing for a professional career. It is hoped that this increased awareness on the part of young people in high school and college will result in an increased supply of competent personnel into our professions. Enclosed is a sheet outlining the criteria for nominations. The award to each of the three winners will include a suitably engraved gold key, known as the National Capital Award, a certificate, to be presented at a luncheon to be held on Wednesday, February 23, 1966 at the Presidential Arms, and a two-day trip to New York and vicinity.
