Approved For Release 2001/08/07 : CIA-RDP83T00573R0Qpr300300003-6 o . 5" ,A- MEMORANDUM FOR: Deputy Director of Data Processing THROUGH: NFAC ADP Control Officer STATINTL SUBJECT: Procurement of Tektronix Interactive Buffer 1. The Office of Research and Development gave demonstrations to me and analysts in my office of the TACK interactive graphics system developed for ORD by - I was impressed by the potential applications of TACK to our problems of data presentation. In order to use the TACK system on our TEKTRONIX display terminals, an Interactive Buffer (see attachment) is required. I request acquisition of one Interactive Buffer for the TEKTRONIX terminal model 4015-1 located in OSR/S.E/F, Room 2G40. 2. Coordination of the administrative matters related to acquiring and installing the Interactive Buffer will be handled by R. M. The Interactive Buffer provides 1023 bytes of off-screen storage which can be used as a straight buffer capable of storing or refreshing alphanumeric or graphic displays, as a text editor, or in conjunction with thumbwheels or an optional joystick, to provide moveable picture elements. Buffer Mode Speeds I/O Opera- tion. In situations where a great many I/O commands tend to slow down operations, the normal Buffer operation is a special advantage, since the computer can dump the I/O strings in the Buffer (and dis- play them on screen) much faster than they could be sent to the Terminal one character at a time. During Buffer operation the terminal keyboard is locked. The terminal is suppressed, and characters re- ceived from the computer or a connected peripheral are stored in sequential Buffer locations, starting at location zero. The contents of the Buffer can then be displayed on the Terminal screen on either a stored or a non-stored, write-thru mode. Text Editing Added to Storage Terminals. The Interactive Buffer adds text editing capability to Tektronix storage terminals. In Compose Mode, previously entered or keyboard characters are dis- played on the Terminal screen normally beginning at X = 0, Y = 33, but not sent directly to the computer. The alphanumeric characters can be deleted one at a time from last character position using backspace and new ones written in, or the entire Buffer contents can be erased and re-written. Once the text is correct to the operator's satisfac- tion, a carriage return causes the Terminal keyboard to be locked and the contents of the Buffer sent to the computer. Relocation Graphics Give Ter- minals new Power and Versatility. Relocation Mode with the Inter- active Buffer increases the graphics power of the Tektronix 4014 or 4015. When Relocation Mode is activated via keyboard rocker switch, Graphic information in the form of a simple pictorial display, or a small part of a larger one is entered in the buffer. It can then be displayed on screen in a non-storing mode and moved to various screen locations by the use of the thumbwheel cursor, or optional 4952 Joystick. Approxi- mately 160 alphanumeric characters or 480 centimeters of graphics can be displayed without flicker. The repositioned display can then be stored and the reference coordi- nates sent to the computer using the crosshair cursor. Relocation Mode provides a means of editing or composing graphic information without erasing the display and starting over. Additional Modes for other Ter- minal Functions. HOLD Mode is entered any time a Hard Copy is commanded. It amounts to a temporary suspension of the non-storing, write-thru Mode during Hard Copy operation or some other special function. STORE Mode locks the Terminal keyboard, and causes the Buffer contents to be sent once to the Terminal screen and stored.
