SUBJECT: DDI Activity Report, 27 September - I October 1982
DCI/DDCI-Assigned Tasks
ALA prepared talking points for the ADCI on the current status of the Namibia
negotiations.
NESA prepared talking points on the Lebanon situation for the ADCI.
OGI briefed the ADCI on recommendations from the Buckley group regarding
alternative energy sources presented at an NSC meeting.
SOYA, with the cooperation of the other DDI offices, has prepared talking points on
problems of NODIS traffic for the DCI to use at his next luncheon with Secretary Shultz.
Of Special Interest This Week
EURA prepared a written briefing for Deputy Secretary of Defense Carlucci in
preparation for his trip to Romania which provided a general political overview on
Romania with emphasis on prospects for Ceausescu.
The Commerce Department requested OEA to provide support for upcoming
negotiations on subsidies and countervailing duties.
OGI met with the Assistant Secretary of Commerce, Dr. Bruce Merrifield, to
discuss the analytic program in foreign industrial competition.

OSWR participated in the interagency meeting chaired by OSTP on the need for
establishing a national policy concerning the international exchange of biotechnology.
OSWR, OGI, and the Assistant NIO-at-Large briefed the Senate Foreign Relations
Committee on nuclear proliferation problems, including the Pakistani nuclear weapon
program.
SOVA briefed the Senate Select Committee for Intelligence on succession in the
Soviet Union and Senator Hart of the Senate Armed Services Committee on Soviet ICBM,
SLBM, and bomber future deployment trends.
A background analysis on the immediate prospects for Soviet grain purchases was
prepared by SOVA for Ambassador David McDonald, Deputy US Trade Representative.

The Directorate was involved in 10 briefings at all levels on the Hill this week.
