MEMORANDUM FOR: Acting Director of Central Intelligence

SUBJECT: DDI Activity Report, 22 November - 26 November 1982
DCI/DDCI-Assigned Tasks
ALA prepared short briefing papers for the DCI to use at the NSC meeting on Latin
America.
OEA and SOVA are preparing papers looking at Soviet-Chinese relations from the
two perspectives in response to a DDCI request on behalf of Secretary Shultz. In
addition, OEA is preparing a paper on US-Chinese relations for the Secretary.
OGI prepared a memorandum for the DCI, "Impact of US Non-Proliferation Policy."
OSWR met with Dr. Weiss, NSC Staff, to discuss plans to conduct an NSC study on
US technology transfer policy. The effort is in the formative stage and is not likely to
get started until after the first of the year.
Of Special Interest This Week
EURA prepared a written briefing on Yugoslav-Soviet relations and SOVA prepared
one on Soviet fishing activity in Panama for Secretary Weinberger.
EURA prepared typescripts for Secretary Shultz in support of his trip to Europe in
early December.
OEA met with Doug McMinn, NSC Staff, to discuss US-Japanese relations.
OEA met with USDA specialists on Chinese agriculture to demonstrate two
computer-based tools for analyzing China's agricultural outlook.
OEA prepared a package of materials for White House staffer, Roger Porter, in
support of his trip to Tokyo.

OGI briefed Steven Piper, Coordinator, Aerospace Trade Policy for the US Trade
Representative, on trends in Italy's aerospace industry and the Agency's current
assessment of Airbus Industrie. Mr. Piper is leaving next week for Rome to talk with
Italian officials concerning Airbus Industrie's A320 program and the outlook for Western
aircraft manufacturers.
OSWR and OEA briefed Dr. Keyworth, the President's Science Advisor, on the
current status and projected capabilities of the PRC strategic missile force.
OSWR continued to prepare support for the DCI and NIO/SP on potential Soviet
responses to US deployment of the MX ICBM in the closely-spaced basing mode.
OSWR presented a briefing on East European computer peripheral technology to the
Peripheral Technology Advisory Committee-representatives from private and federal
sectors who influence US export controls-at the Department of Commerce.
OSWR briefed Ambassador Kirkpatrick and selected foreign ambassadors to the UN
on chemical warfare in Southeast Asia and prepared an unclassified update paper on the
topic (with the Department of State) for release on 29 November.
SOVA provided the White House material on Soviet defense costs and US
comparisons for the President's speech on arms policy.
Looking Ahead
NESA will meet with representatives of OPIC to discuss the situation in Lebanon.
NESA will meet with Richard Troop, Special Assistant to the AID Director, to
discuss the Egyptian economy and US aid options.
OGI will meet with Leo Cherne to discuss intelligence analysis and support on the
international finance issue.
OSWR will brief Lt. Gen. Larry Welch, Deputy Chief of Staff for Programs and
Research, Air Force, on the technology transfer loss issue.

The Directorate was involved in 2 briefings at the staff level on the Hill this week.
